10 Liverpool carol concerts to get you feeling all Christmassy

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Liverpool – and it’ll soon be sounding like it too.

There’s nothing like a chorus of well-loved carols from Away in the Manger to Once in Royal David’s City to get you feeling all Christmassy in Liverpool.

And these are just some of the concerts across the Liverpool City Region which you can book for now to start getting you into the seasonal spirit!

M&S Bank Arena – Celebrating Christmas with Strawberry Field (Sunday, November 27: 7.30pm)

Strawberry Field Liverpool

BBC Radio Merseyside’s Paul Beesley comperes this special festive celebration, as Strawberry Field invites you to an evening of seasonal music, proceeds of which will help it to keep its gate open for the good of its trainees and the wider community.

Asa Murphy will star alongside Liverpool Walton Salvation Army Band, Liverpool Signing Choir and Sale Salvation Army Songsters for an evening of carols and readings to celebrate Christmas in The Auditorium.

Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King – Carols by Candlelight in aid of the NSPCC (Tuesday, December 6: 7-8.30pm)

Enjoy an evening of carols and support a great cause as NSPCC’s Carols by Candlelight returns to Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral to celebrate the festive season.

Performers from across Merseyside include the PopVox Choir, Metropolitan Cathedral Youth Choir, Connected Voices Choir and Wirral Schools’ Concert Band. 

Tickets are £10 (children under 16 are free when accompanied by an adult) and every penny raised supports NSPCC on Merseyside.

Liverpool Parish Church (Our Lady and St Nicholas) (Tuesday, December 6: 5.30-6.30pm)

Carol Concerts

Professional Liverpool, in association with Liverpool Chamber, Growth Platform and Liverpool BID Company, is inviting the business community and friends to enjoy a traditional start to Christmas with the Service of Lessons and Carols at Liverpool Parish Church.

St Nick’s choir will be singing, and there’ll be readings and all your favourite carols. The service is free but you will need to book a place.

St George’s Hall – Prostate Cancer UK presents Carols at St George’s Hall (Thursday, December 8: 7.30-9.30pm)

Carol Concerts

Celebrity guests join Prostate Cancer UK for a special city carol concert. You can listen to two incredible choirs – The Bunker Boys and Liverpool Voice Choir – while enjoying a glass of mulled wine and mince pies and, in between songs TV presenter Jenny Powell and Coronation Street’s Vicky Entwistle will perform some readings close to their hearts.

They hope it’ll be the perfect night to get together and raise awareness of the disease and get into the Christmas spirit. Tickets are £15.

St George’s Hall – The Lord Mayor of Liverpool Carol Concert (Friday, December 9: 5.30pm)

Carol Concerts

Actress and Comedienne Pauline Daniels hosts and performs in this special fundraising concert, along with Singing Our Socks Off community choir, and Hands and Voices singing and signing choir.

Tickets are £10 which includes a warm drink and a mince pie.

St George’s Hall – Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’s Celebrate a Life Liverpool (Sunday, December 11: 2.30pm)

Join Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation for its poignant carol service of celebration and remembrance. This year the Celebrate a Life service offers the chance to reflect and remember the joy of Christmases-past to bring the memory of loved ones into the present through performances of beautiful carols and heartfelt readings. 

To order tickets, people are asked to make a dedication online: Celebrate a Life 2022. Anyone who’s made a dedication and wants to order more tickets can complete a form on RCLCF’s website or call 0333 323 7200.

Liverpool Cathedral – Cheshire and Merseyside NHS Carol Concert (Wednesday, December 14: 7.30-9.30pm)

NHS staff from across the North West have extended a warm invitation to join them as they come together to celebrate the festive season at its annual carol concert, with a collection of carols sung by Cheshire and Merseyside NHS Choir, and seasonal readings.

No booking is needed.

The Liverpool Philharmonic – The Spirit of Christmas (Saturday, December 17, and Wednesday, December 21 – Friday, December 23: 7:30pm)

Carol Concerts

For presenter Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason, Christmas is a ‘glorious hurly-burly’ and a time for family, so who better to host the Phil’s annual celebration? Ian Tracey will conduct for classic carols and audience singalongs, and there’ll be seasonal readings, surprises, and a special Christmas gift from Artist in Residence Pacho Flores.

Liverpool Cathedral – A Christmas Sequence of Carols (Saturday, December 17: 3-4.30pm)

A festive programme of carols is performed by the popular Cathedral Choir,  along with a selection of readings.

The event is free and there’s no need to book.

The Liverpool Philharmonic – Carols by Candlelight (Tuesday, December 20: 7.30pm)

A beautiful concert of carols and seasonal classics, staged in full 18th Century costume in an atmospheric candle-lit style setting – if this doesn’t get you feeling festive, nothing will!

Michael Bawtree is conductor and Madison Nonoa is soprano, and you can hear Handel’s Christmas sequence from Messiah and Eternal Source of Light Divine, David Willcocks’ Deck the Hall and Walford Davies’ The Holly and the Ivy, with music from the Mozart Festival Orchestra. And there’ll be popular carols for everyone to join in such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, O Come, all ye Faithful and Once in Royal David’s City, and more.
