10 places for groceries in Liverpool during lockdown

Securing a supermarket slot still seems less likely than winning the lottery, but there are loads of people out there waiting to deliver all the essential items – as well as a few little treats – while we stay home and stay safe.

Our Delivery Directory – in conjunction with Independent Liverpool and Liverpool BID Company – is packed full of local businesses just waiting to help you out, putting a smile on your face and food in your cupboards!

So as our wonderful NHS Heroes battle to beat COVID-19, our small independents are rallying round and doing their bit too.

Here is just a few who have risen to the challenge to help us all out…

Tavern Co (Groceries)

The Smithdown Road restaurant is closed for now, but’s it’s offering a great grocery delivery service between 9am and 2pm for the community.

You can get all your basics, eggs, milk, bread, etc., as well as mixed fruit and veg boxes, pasta, meat and – goes without saying – toilet rolls!

All the drivers and packers are unpaid volunteers (any tips and delivery fees go to them) but, as the Tavern’s Keith Gurney says to customers: “Charity begins at home… you have supported the Tavern Co for 30 years this July. This is our opportunity to give something back.”

Any proceeds of sales every week will go to a local charity.

Claremont Farm Shop

It’s having trouble getting hold of some of its normal products but the Bebington farm shop is still keeping its shelves fully stocked and offering non-contact collection from its car park (which is ‘working a dream’) to ensure it can provide essentials for the vulnerable and most in need.

It doesn’t have a product list but there are pictures of the store on its website and if you zoom in close enough you can see what they’ve got.

It is asking people to drive to the farm shop where possible, but can provide a delivery service for the over 70s, people without transport and others who really need it.

Bexley’s Craft Butchers

The three Bexley’s shops in Old Swan, Tuebrook and Huyton are still open for customers offering its usual range of meat products.

But it’s also offering hampers from £35 which are delivered free of charge and can be ordered online, but slots do get booked up.

Liverpool Cheese Company

Customers are restricted to two at a time but the store is still open and selling its gorgeous selections of cheeses, chutneys, butters and biscuits.

It’s currently offering free home deliveries in the Liverpool area and deliveries for a £2 fee to the Wirral area too. And, with staff from a wide area, it might even be possible to arrange deliveries to a wider area (specifically Cheshire).

If in doubt, give them a call on 0151 428 3942, or order online.

Windmill Wholefoods

Windmill Wholefoods is still open for its range of foods and pre-ordered fruit and veg boxes.

The independent organic wholefood shop and workers’ co-operative on Aigburth Road stocks a wide range of fresh organic fruit and vegetables, organic wholefoods, ethical and fairtrade foods, and eco-friendly household and bodycare products.

Birkenhead Market

There’s a selection of stalls still open and ready for customers.

They are Wards Fish; Moneysworth; Fruit and Veg; Malambs meats, The Rolling Pin Bakery and Shelley’s Bread & Cakes.

Melo’s

The international food supermarket in London Road has changed its opening hours from 11am to 7pm during the coronavirus crisis but it’s still offering a range of fresh foods and groceries from Italy, Greece, Turkey, The Middle East, and The Far East.

The shop sells everything from pulses, pasta, pickles and oils, frozen foods and fresh, and is a Halal butcher.

It delivers too within the Liverpool area.

The Hoylake Pantry

The Pantry is now taking orders for collection and delivery so you can still get your zero-waste shopping.

Collections will be made up in recyclable paper bags and if you are ordering any liquids or milks you need to make sure you take your bottles with you when you collect so they can be refilled. If you’d like your food order in your own containers rather than bags you can drop them off with the store beforehand (just let them know) or you can book a container collection from your house and collect later from the shop.

To avoid contact during this time they are just requesting that customers leave containers outside their property when collection is due, when delivering they’ll follow similar practices.

The Hoylake Pantry stocks everything from beans, pulses, nuts and seeds, to milk, yoghurts, detergents, soaps conditioner and other liquids

LIDS

Liverpool Independent Delivered Services has been launched by Liverpool Chef Dave Critchley from Lu Ban restaurant in the Cains Brewery Village.

The service brings together some of the industry’s leading producers and fresh food suppliers has been set up to offer families a high-quality delivery service of essential fresh foods from meat from McKuhen’s Butchers in Speke, to fruit and veg from Liverpool Produce to cheese from Liverpool Cheese Company and more…

There’s a full list of who’s supporting it and what they provide.

Follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Kirkdale Boxing Club

The club is pulling no punches when it comes to helping out people in the community and it’s expanded the Christmas Box support it usually hands out in the festive period during the coronavirus crisis.

It’s teamed up with sponsors including LA Productions, Transalpino and Maverick Stars to give out up to 70 hot meals – plus a few other food essentials – to the elderly and vulnerable every day.

The meals are available for collection and they can also be delivered if people can’t get to the club.

If you know someone who could benefit from a hot meal or you’d like to receive one – if possible – call 0151 933 9889 or 07951819170.
