11 healthy but hearty eats in Liverpool

Come on admit it, who is on a diet but failing miserably?

Yes we are all guilty too, so many selection boxes still lying round the house and too many treats still in the fridge.

We have picked out 11 healthier options from Liverpool’s amazing food scene, all guaranteed to fill you up just as much as that tub of Quality Street you are three quarters of the way into.

109 Allerton

No prizes for anyone who guesses where this restaurant is. 109 Allerton is one of the cities best kept secrets offering a delectable menu focussing on keeping you not only well fed, but healthy. The Aubergine Stack that was added to the menu this winter just can’t be overlooked, to be washed down with a healthy juice or warming tea. As we said, keeping your belly full whilst taking your mind off the calories. More info on their Facebook page here.

Lock & Key

Situated on Duke Street, Lock & Key Hotel, Bar & Kitchen is Liverpool’s latest foodie addition. Although this beautiful venue offers all your usual, naughty treats at a certain class, the eatery also has its healthy side. This January we would highly recommend the brunch, served until 4pm, to get your day, however late it may start, off to a flying one. Plus, we mean, just look at it…

Check out the full menu and keep up to date on plans for the new hotel on their website here.

Dia + Noche

Taking up residence in what was once Miyagi, one of the latest additions to Bold Street, Dia + Noche could be your saving grace for dining out during this health kick phase of the year. No matter what diet you are following, there is something on this menu for you, from Steak Tartar to a beautifully warming Three Citrus Autumn Salad with a stand out being the El Scouse, offering a Spanish twist on the local belly filler. Head to the Facebook page for more info.

Our Kitchen

When this relatively new Bold Street resident opened its doors last year it had its vision well and truly set. Healthy food that doesn’t compromise on taste or quality. That’s why Our Kitchen is ideal for dining out this January as you can tuck into eloquent dishes such as a fennel roasted carrot salad with cashew cheese. Sounds bloody good, right? Full menu and booking details here.

Green Days

Simply put, Green Days is one of the best vegetarian and vegan cafes in Liverpool. Set in a renovated house just off Lark Lane, the owners talk to you like real human beings, the prices are reasonable, the food is gorgeous and without any guilt. Everything is homemade in those 4 walls with the full english breakfast being a stand out for us. Or, for your sweet tooth, tuck into a homemade vegan cake washed down with a vegan shake, all guilt free. Give them a LIKE on Facebook here.

Chop’d

With sites located on Dale Street and The Plaza, Chop’d are here to show you that salads don’t have to be boring. With takeaway and delivery options, as well as being perfect to just nip into at lunch, there’s no excuse for not eating healthily here. From Butternut Squash stews to Jerk Chicken salads, there is something for every diet, and, you can even build your own! Full menu here.

White Wolf Kitchen

White Wolf Yoga & Kitchen is exactly what you need to get your year off to the start it needs. Whether you take part in the yoga or not, the kitchen is a delightful place to be offering healthy smoothie’s that will broaden your horizons and narrow your waste line. From seitan sandwiches to superfood salads the menu is as interesting as it is delicious. Also, be sure to get yourself a Detox Juice to wash away those December demons. View the delicious menu here.

The Garden at FACT

If you’re looking for a quaint getaway for lunch whilst you’re in town, you might not think of heading into FACT. However, head into FACT you should as The Garden is the perfect place for you to grab a bite whilst staying healthy. Run by Leaf, there are options for carnivores and vegans alike with the ever popular Soup and a Sandwich deal in Leaf making its way across the road. Head to the website here.

Down The Hatch

If your stomach is telling you to carry on eating junk food through January, but your head and waste line are begging you to stop, then this one is for you. Down The Hatch specialises in vegan junk food. Don’t get us wrong, it’s not quite the same as tucking into a salad, but its a damn sight better for you than the meaty alternative, and with all the taste. To get some vegan dogs or loaded fries down your hatch, get down to Parliament Street this January. Keep up to date with Down The Hatch on Facebook.

The Brink

Whether you’re partaking in Veganuary or Dry January, The Brink on Parr Street has what you’re looking for. The Brink is a dry bar throughout the year, turning its hand to making indulgent mocktails and delicious grub. The pizza’s have to be a stand out for us, Nojito mocktail (see what they did there) and Tropical Mist Smoothie. If you need pulling back from the brink after December, this is the place to do it. Website is this way.

IZAKAYA

Riding the wave of 2017 that saw Castle Street crash into becoming the new social hub of the city is Japanese restaurant, IZAKAYA. The main menu has oriental classic such as katsu curries and steamed buns, however the stand out speciality is the sushi. Although not for everyone, if you sushi is your thing, or you just want to try something new this new year, then IZAKAYA is the best place to get real, hand rolled sushi in the city. Head to the website for more info.

So there you have it, get yourself back out there and enjoying some of the cities best food in a healthy way. Let us know how you get on, or where you’ve been going this month on Twitter or Facebook or email me direct Alex@theguideliverpool.com
