11 Iconic Liverpool buildings opening their doors for free, this LightNight


This is the perfect opportunity to explore some of the most famous city buildings after dark, without it costing you a penny. Thankyou LightNight Liverpool!

From the steps of St George’s Hall to the mysterious museum on Abercrombie Square, LightNight provides you with a free pass to some of the cities most fascinating buildings. With more than 100 free events taking place right across the city, don’t miss your chance to see what amazing things go on behind the familiar facades of these amazing city hotspots.

Here’s 11 iconic Liverpool buildings opening their doors for free, this LightNight….

1 – Liverpool Cathedral

There are 8 different events taking place on LightNight at the iconic Liverpool Cathedral. Towering above the city skyline, the largest cathedral in the country will play host to uplifting choral concerts, chant workshops, the spiritual sounds of evensong, a truly though provoking Death Café and last but not least, The Invisible Choir at the Lady Chapel. Exploring ideas around death with tracks such as ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and ‘Lazarus’ by David Bowie. Most definitely one to be experienced to be believed. More info on timings here. 

2 – Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Local musicians take to the Music Room at the stunning, art deco Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on LightNight. Performing live from 5pm until 10pm, each of the 5 acts will perform a 10 minutes slot per hour so whatever time you arrive, you’re going to see something new. More info here. 

3 – The Oratory

Set in the grounds of Liverpool Cathedral, The Oratory was previously used to hold funerals before the burial process in neighbouring St James Cemetery. Over 180 years later this historic building is now a gallery space and from 5pm until 9pm this LightNight, its playing host to a collection of paintings called ‘Sea Fever’, by the children of LIPA primary school. 4 – Liverpool Central Library

If you’ve still not visited Liverpool Central Library, where have you been? Following its multi-million pound renovation, the four floor venue mixes old and new with incredible results. During LightNight you can see and experience more than 10 different events. From live music, community choirs, dance, Shakespeare, puppetry and lots more. Get involved here. 

5 – Garstang Museum of Archeology

Based on Abercromby Square in the Georgian Quarter the University of Liverpool Garstang Museum of Archaeology is the home of a very special Egyptian Mummy. This LightNight you can explore the Egyptian Afterlife collection of Professor John Garstang and find out exactly what your ‘scouse brows’ say about your personality. Cleopatra had the pencilled look nailed! More here.

6 – Everyman Theatre

Our beloved Everyman Theatre throws open its doors with two family friendly events from 5pm until late. The historic theatre that kick started the careers of many great actors is offering you a chance to step into the lime light on LightNight. The Drag Lab! performance has already sold out but ‘ME! It’s who I want to be’ is open to all and encourages kids to dress up, have a rave, get their faces painted and indulge in some fun crafts. More info here.

7 – St George’s Hall

It wouldn’t be Light Night without a whole host of events taking place in and around St George’s Hall. From the steps to the great hall, this iconic Liverpool building will be taken over on LightNight with unmissable sights and sounds. Check out the creepy gravestone light installation, join in a big sing along, hear brass bands, see live performances and dance late into the night at the family friendly Ceilidh. More here. 

8 – Liverpool Town Hall

Liverpool’s majestic Grade I Listed Town Hall is the jewel of Castle street. On LightNight, the Town Hall staff are teaming up with Liverpool Arab Arts Festival and Liverpool Arabic Centre to invite visitors to drop into a traditional Arabic ‘Living Room’. Also at the Town Hall, vocalist Jennifer John invites you to jam with your voice in family friendly workshops from 6pm. More info here. 

9 – Liverpool Medical Institution

The beautiful, columned building on the corner of Hope St has been a mystery to many. This LightNight, you’re invited to step inside Liverpool Medical Institution to see a fascinating animation about being a school girl in Liverpool and g behind the scenes in ‘Preparing For Surgery’! 10 – The Athenaeum

Just a stones throw from the Bluecoat, The Athenaeum is a private members club which dates back to the late 1700’s. Hidden in plain sight the library, dining room and bar opens its doors to the public on LightNight from 5pm. Feel tree to wander the spiral staircase and check out the creative writing workshops – Ritual Words & Stories or listen to compelling poetry by Pauline Rowe in this rarely seen setting. 11 – RIBA North

RIBA North is based at Mann Island and this LightNight you can get lost in music while finding out if buildings can actually speak. Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is hosting a live, 18 minute long violin performance that you, the visitor is in control of, create your own symphony here. Also don’t forget to check out the exhibition ‘In Character’ which looks at how architecture communicates. More info here.
