11 Ways Liverpool is absolutely winning in 2018

Alright so we love nothing more than singing the praises of our amazing city, but we’ve got good reason to!

Living, working and playing in Liverpool has never been so good. In 2018, we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Capital of Culture year and it feels a bit like we’ve renewed our vows. With a packed cultural events programme for all to enjoy, we’re enjoying a honeymoon, right here, in our own backyard.

In the first 6 months of the year, we’ve packed in more festivals, cruise ships, bar and restaurant openings, attracted huge investment in the local film industry, showcased 2000 years of ancient Chinese history and illuminated the city for LightNight. We had more people line the streets and dance their hearts out at Brazilica, Liverpool Pride, Africa Oye and of course the revamped Liverpool International Music Festival, and attracted international superstars to our award winning venues. G’wed the scouse crowds!

When it comes to socialising, you’ve got the world in one city. From Vietnamese to Italian, sushi to scouse, you can dine on world cuisine, lovingly prepared and Kickstarter supported, right here in Liverpool. We’re leading the way with new dining concepts from Grand Central Food Bazaar, Baltic Market and Dockside Dining and changing the way we eat and socialise, add to that annual foodie events like Liverpool Food and Drink Festival and you can’t deny that Liverpool has so much to offer.

Here’s 11 ways Liverpool is absolutely winning in 2018….

1 – Any Excuse to Party

Only Liverpool could start up another year long party to celebrate a 10th anniversary, we’re like your mate who has to have an entire weekend, four nights out and three cakes to celebrate her birthday! From Chinese New Year to the stunning Terracotta Army, Red Bull Drift Shifters, Lost Castles and a couple of Giant visitors, the Liverpool 2018 events plan is ambitious, exciting and offers something for everyone. Events grow year on year and Liverpool Pride 2018 was the biggest crowd pull to date.

As well as our amazing events, new restaurants and bars continue to open and flourish in our city. Venues like The Florist, Baltic Market, Gino’s, Lunyalita and On Air have all had an incredible first year of business and we expect even more growth in our hospitality sector as we enter 2019.

2 – A Giant Dose of Culture

Speaking of Giant visitors. Only Liverpool could commission another, final visit from the incredible Royal De Luxe street theatre company. Following three mind-blowing previous walk-arounds, the city and for the first time, Wirral, will see Giants roam the streets, spreading the word of the final instalment of their heart warming story.

3 – All Eyes on Us

Liverpool has already welcomed a wealth of international attention as Royal Albert Dock welcomed The Clipper Round The World Yacht Race final back to the dock. We’ve built on our treasured relationship with Shanghai with ongoing exhibitions and workshops based on The China Dream (ps if you’ve still not seen the Terracotta Warriors, go check them out!) Our festivals bring tastes of African, Jamaican, Brazilian and Indian culture and the international DJ’s and artists have flooded our stages, who saw DJ Jazzy Jeff at LIMF 2018?

4 – Lights,Camera….

No stranger to the big screen, 2018 saw Liverpool secure investment into its Film Studio. The world-renowned Twickenham Studios, famous for its work on movies such as ‘Blade Runner’, ‘The Italian Job’, ‘Gandhi’ and more recently ‘The Martian’ and ‘Baby Driver’, will move into the iconic Littlewoods Building on Edge Lane and provide incredible opportunities for those looking for a career in media. Move over Hollywood, we got this.

5 – Ready for the Scrum

Rugby League World Cup bid team

Liverpool continues to build on its sporting passion in 2018. The city is hosting the Boccia World Championships this summer, the Netball World Cup is counting down to its 2019 start date at the Echo Arena and if all that wasn’t enough, the city just launched a bid to host the Rugby League World Cup too. All that alongside the 2018/19 season at Anfield, Goodison and Prenton Park, and world class golf and horse racing on an annual basis. You’d best have your Weetabix!

6 – Come Fly With Us

Liverpool John Lennon Airport may have had a humble beginning but with more than 70 destinations on offer from our regional airport, you can be in the heart of Europe in less than 90 minutes. Blue Air made LJLA it’s first UK base and even had a specially designed Liverpool aircraft designed. Easy Jet just added four brand new routes including Turkey, France and Italy and a brand new aircraft, helping to carry more than 2.4million passengers to and from our city, every year.

7 – Ready, Steady, Go!

Talking of transport (no, not you Channel 4) we’ve never had so many options when it comes to travel. Lime Street is undergoing a transformation to make national travel more convenient and the Merseyrail network continues to get us from Southport to South Park Way and over to Wirral for sunny beach days. Arriva North West has updated its fleet so we can now charge our phones and hog the free wifi on our way to and from work and….Liverpool also just welcomed it’s 100th City Bike station as more of us take to pedal power to explore our region.

8 – Raise a Pint Glass

Cains Brewery Village

Our Independent business community is thriving with areas such as Baltic Triangle leading the way on how to transform an old warehouse into a social space that the public just can’t get enough of. We marvel at how these businesses come together to support one another all in the name of providing new, exciting, engaging spaces and events for us all to enjoy. We can’t wait to see the New Bird Skate Park revamp and the huge renovation of Cain’s Brewery too.

9 – Destination Retail Therapy

The new AX store in Liverpool ONE

Liverpool shopping is amazing. From the Liverpool ONE high street and designer stores to Royal Albert Dock boutiques and antiquities of the Baltic where you can’t help but be drawn in for a little mooch. Our makers markets, independent art offerings and up and coming designers give Liverpool an edge when it comes to shopping. Pick up the latest ‘Must Have’ item or take home something completely unique that will become a beloved wardrobe staple, you’ll find them both here.

10 – Sail Away With Hope In Your Heart

We’re no stranger to welcoming royalty to our city and we’re unlikely to forget the spectacle of the Three Queens sailing up the Mersey anytime soon. We welcome visiting cruise ships and passengers to the city on a weekly basis (how stunning is the Queen Elizabeth?) and obviously we’re going to build on that! Planning approval has been granted for a new cruise terminal that could see journeys start and end right here, on the Mersey. Imagine sailing home and seeing the Liver birds as you arrive!

11 – World Heritage & a Royal Approval

The Albert Dock continues to draw in visitors and locals alike as the site plays host to huge events such as Clipper Round The World Race, Folk on the Dock, Tate Liverpool exhibitions and a wealth of restaurants, shops and bars. 2018 saw the UNESCO World Heritage title retained and the dockland area received a royal approval from the Queen, officially renaming the site The Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. You can call us Ma’am.
