12 festive events will countdown to Christmas in Liverpool

This year, the city is preparing for a Christmas that is merrier and brighter than ever before! Kicking off the celebrations are Paperwork Theatre who will count Liverpool down to the big day itself.

From stories & songs to dancing & drag, 12 festive pop up events counting Liverpool down to Christmas 2021. Keep an eye out on Church street, Williamson Square, Whitechapel, and Clayton Square at 6pm in the evenings this December for surprise celebrations for all the family.

With Liverpool’s retail and leisure shopping district as the stage, Paperwork Theatre count Liverpool down to Christmas 2021 with 12 pop-up, live events. Bursting on to the streets from 6pm on selected dates in December, audiences of all ages can enjoy live music, street theatre acts, flash mobs and even a party game or two.

The pop-up performances are planned to take place on and around Church Street with several performances specially designed to promenade to locations including Whitechapel, Clayton Square and Williamson Square.

Each night is a surprise, featuring different Liverpool artists and performers. The performances take inspiration from the advent themes of joy, peace, hope and love, and will be accompanied by Paperwork’s dedicated team of elves who will launch the nightly countdown.

Paperwork Theatre’s Co-Artistic Director, Nicole Behan has said:

“We understand that this year has been extremely difficult for all our communities, and we anticipate the festive season will also bring its own set of challenges. This production seeks to bring people together to experience the joy of theatre, music, art, and live events while also encouraging people to stay and play in Liverpool BID’s shopping areas, whilst valuing and reminding them of what they have in the city centre.”

Christmas Countdown is a Paperwork Theatre production in partnership with Open Culture, supported by Liverpool BID Company, Culture Liverpool Without Walls Funding and Marks & Spencer.

Earlier this year, Paperwork Theatre were awarded one of Culture Liverpool’s Without Walls grants; a £100,000 fund which aims to support cultural organisations post-covid in delivering new outdoor festivals and help bring festival vibes back to the city.

The partnership between Open Culture, Liverpool BID and Paperwork is now in its 5th year. Since 2017, the organisations have delivered Elfie Selfie at St Johns Shopping Centre; an interactive theatre experience that encourages families to snap a selfie with an elfie. After a short hiatus due to the pandemic, the activity will be back in the precinct this year in addition to Christmas Countdown.

When reflecting on the impact of the production, Co-Artistic Director Hayley commented “we are working with over 80 freelance artists for Christmas Countdown including performers, designers and production staff. We have always been passionate about supporting the local arts ecology and after such a turbulent time for our creative community, we are especially proud to be creating tangible opportunities for theatre makers to make new work and engage with audiences once again.”

Christmas Countdown will be popping up on selected dates between 2nd- 23rd December.
Performances take place in Liverpool city centre and are free of charge.
