20 ways to beat boredom during lockdown at home in Liverpool

It’s a time like we’ve never known, but Liverpool is making the most of staying at home during lockdown.

Whether it’s the two of you, you’re with family, flat-mates, or home alone, our lives have never looked so different, and that’s why it’s important to stay happy as well as healthy over the next few weeks.

Creating new routines gives us something to look forward to and lots of ways to put our minds at ease and keep a smile on our faces.

So, prepare to sprinkle some fun and feel-good factor with some new ways to break up your week! Have fun!

1 - Family history projects

Call grandparents and get to know all about them! Encourage kids to start a family history project, interviewing parents and relatives. Put together a folder, write down some questions and you might find out a few new things too! From growing up in Liverpool, to wedding days, hilarious stories and brilliant achievements, learning about your family is a great excuse to keep in touch, and will keep children fascinated for hours.

If this is something they’d love, kids aged four-11 can create their own exhibition or art gallery with the brilliant My Home My Museum Project at National Museums Liverpool.

2 - Check-in on your neighbours

Elderly neighbours might be feeling especially lonely during lockdown. Let them know you’re thinking of them by brightening up their day with a painting, delivering homemade bakes or flowers, and we guarantee a free smile on everyone’s faces.

If you’re able to help, you could make a huge difference to local families and vulnerable people in Merseyside with just a small donation through Mayor Joe Anderson’s Hope Fund which started with a £20k contribution from the council budget to take care of our community.

And let’s not forget younger people relying on the work of The Hive Wirral to help keep them safe and happy during lockdown.

3 - Quiz Night

Look out for the virtual pub quiz from Dead Crafty Beer Company and follow Bongo’s Bingo and Scouse Bird Quiz for updates on the next big night in, or go for it yourself and choose a quiz master to find questions and topics online, create some rounds, download the Zoom app and set up a WhatsApp group for players!

Answers and picture rounds can be sent on WhatsApp for the perfect excuse to enjoy some company, while you get together over a few glasses of something great!

4 - Serve up a tasty treat

Choose a destination and rustle up vacation vibes by cooking up a new recipe from somewhere you want to go on your next get-a-way.

You can get fresh, local ingredients delivered to your door by LIDS – Liverpool Independent Delivered Services – and try something different to take your tastebuds away, from Spanish tapas to Jerk chicken and follow Mowgli Street Food for easy to rustle up ay home recipes.

5 - Music night

Who needs a DJ? Listen to all the latest from Liverpool including the incredible rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone from Jamie Webster, check out the huge buzz around honorary Scouse students Chinatown Shalom, or dig out an old classic from The Coral or Cast for a blast from the past with tracks you’d forgotten you loved.

For something a bit different, get yourself involved in Lee Butler’s House Party or tune into the Beatles City podcast brought to you by the people who were actually there – including Sir Paul, himself! Make it a family night, take turns to play favourites, and let the kids educate you on the latest sounds and moves!

6 - Photo opportunities!

We snap and upload on our phones these days, but if you’ve been meaning to sort through those old snaps for years, now is the perfect time, and looking through all those old memories is a super cute way to spend an evening, with brilliant laughs guaranteed!

Also, flick through all of your pictures of Liverpool send us all your favourites @TheGuideLpool!

7 - Enjoy the outdoors at home

You don’t need a garden to enjoy a splash of colour with flowers or great-smelling herbs. It’s the ideal time of year to start planting seeds in a window box or plant pots. Children can get creative with miniature landscapes of Lego, toy figures or their own craft creations.

8 - Home Bakery

Straighten your pinnies and turn the kitchen into your very own bakery! Whether you fancy baking a loaf, encouraging kids to get creative with bread roll designs for lunch, or something a little sweeter to look forward to, take it to the next level by inventing your own family brand with a shop sign, and new names for their creations and time with fly.

9 - Create a Memory Box

Capture memories and keep children entertained, from drawings to football tickets, favourite days out and souveniers, keep all those special memories in one place. A memory box also makes a lovely gift for grand-parents, or to share with best-friends.

10 - New home vibes!

It’s not boring, we promise! Decluttering space makes your place look and feel as good as new – and it pays off with less stress and more relaxation.

Drawer by drawer, shelf by shelf, set yourself a task to clean and organise that kitchen drawer full of old menus or the cupboard full of …well, you’re not too sure, and get ready to feel like you’ve reset the household.

11 - Set-up camp

Take Glamping to next level by grabbing your sleeping bags for a night in the lounge! Gather those games, light candles, tell stories, and pack yourselves a picnic for an indoor camping trip to wherever you want your imagination to take you.

12 - Afternoon Tea

Host an afternoon tea party to break up the day and catch up with everyone over cake! Wear something lovely, set the table, treat yourself to a delivery from Liverpool Tea Warehouse and get together on-screen to top-up teapots and enjoy miniature sandwiches as good as the best place in town!

Look at the above offering from Hard Days Night Hotel!

13 - Portrait painting

Get inspired with online displays and exhibitions from Tate Liverpool and turn drawing into family memories by creating family portraits! Use photographs or sit-down and relax while you offer your best attempts at capturing each other on the page! Frame your work and you’ve just started a family gallery that can be updated every year!

14 - Start your own bar and restaurant

Make a date with friends or family once a week with a family meal out – at home! Set up Skype, pour yourselves a glass, and you’ve got the perfect chance to catch up with the gang like it’s not even lockdown!

Did someone say, let’s meet up early for Happy Hour? Don’t forget, you can become a regular at Liverpool Lockdown pub The Virchy on Facebook and find all, and we mean all, the essentials you need, from groceries to drinks, birthday cakes to fresh ground coffee all delivered to your door from the Liverpool Local Business Guide updated daily!

15 - Home Spa

There’s nothing better to brighten your mood or unwind than a pamper night at the end of the week. If you need to stock up on essentials, take a look at The Scouse Bird Shop, chill out with a deliver very from Wirral Candle Company, stick on a playlist and soak in the bath with a face-mask.

When you’ve enjoyed the lotions and potions, relax with a mani and pedi, blow-dry your hair, and enjoy feeling good to go!

16 - Start a blog

Share your thoughts with the big, wide world with your own blog. Whether you’re an expert, or eager to find out more about a topic or interest, it’s a great way to take your mind out of the house. The subjects are endless, and the audience is out there.

17 - Plan a Road Trip

We won’t be stuck at home forever, and we’re going to appreciate being out and about like never before, so plan your next adventure with an online tour of places you’d like to visit.

Whether it’s brilliant day out at a Liverpool attraction, you can take a sneak peak around National Museums Liverpool and Knowsley Safari with virtual tours and videos, or plan a weekend away or your next holiday, online. Even better, do this closer to home, and make your allocated hour more exciting!

18 - Revamp your wardrobe

Start with the things you love and actually wear, and let’s see what’s left to declutter that wardrobe for once! Make separate piles for Ebay or to take to Charity as soon as we can,

and not only will you have the organised wardrobe you’ve always wanted, but plenty of space for something new that you actually need!

19 - Restyle your home - without spending

Rethink your rooms and try something new during lockdown. At the moment, a change of scenery is just what we need, so switch up the layout of furniture, try new ways to use lighting, and you can completely change the atmosphere, with new ideas that make better use of space.

20 - Do something entirely different!

So many things you never get around to doing – and now you finally have the time! We’ll all be back to having no time at all soon enough, so whatever it is you’d love to learn, try, or practice, find the latest online info from The Women’s Org, tune into an online tutorial, order supplies online, and leave lockdown with something cool to show for it.

Get involved with online footy coaching from Liverpool’s Tom Owens on Instagram, regular Yoga sessions from Awake Liverpool and get Personal Training for kids and adults from Jay Harris to keep on top of your health and fitness at home.

We want to hear how you’re all getting on, so don’t be a stranger!
