The scheme is a part of a bigger programme which aims to enhance important routes within the Liverpool City Region.

The next stage of more than £2million of improvement works for Wavertree High Street is set to be approved at next week’s Cabinet meeting.

After an agreement from the Cabinet, Liverpool City Council will appoint a contractor to create a series of upgrades made to improve accessibility and safety throughout the Wavertree High Street route, including the Clock Tower roundabout to Spofforth Road.

These improvements are funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Key Route Network Levelling Up project.

The upgrades include new controlled pedestrian crossings at the Picton Road, Wellington Road and Rathbone Road junction, alongside upgraded dropped kerbs and tactile paving at existing crossing points. The road will also be resurfaced, and drainage improvements will be carried out.

The Work is scheduled to start mid- June and will take approximately 26 weeks to finish.

To be able to deliver these important changes, the Council has been awarded £13.6 million, which will be used across locations such as Queens Drive and Speke Hall Road. This investment sets out to help boost the reliability of major roads, reduce congestion and make routes safer and more accessible for all users.

After the scheme has been approved, the appointed contractor and Council will meet with residents and businesses at a community event to discuss the plan’s details and answer questions.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said:

“The safety of all road users is a priority to us, whether they’re driving, walking or wheeling. This is a particularly busy junction, and we know residents have raised concerns about how difficult it can be to cross safely.

These upgrades will make a real difference for pedestrians and will help create a safer, more accessible environment for everyone who uses the high street.”
