As part of it’s major UK Tour, War Horse comes to the Liverpool Empire from 15th November until 2nd December 2017 and we can guarantee you wont ever have been a show like this before. Following on from an enormously successful tour back in 2014, the National Theatre has brought War Horse star, Joey in from pasture to visit a number of brand new cities, including Liverpool.
Nick Stafford’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s remarkable story of courage, loyalty and friendship about a young boy called Albert and his horse, Joey, is set against the back drop of the First World War. War Horse is the most successful play in the National Theatre’s history and features ground-breaking puppetry which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage.

1 – Joey & Co
It takes 8 months to build a complete set of puppets for War Horse and four legged steeds aren’t the only animals in the show, Joey and Topthorn are joined by a goose, two swallows and two crows! Each horse puppet weighs around 6 stones and is operated by three puppeteers who undergo 8 weeks of training before being able to perform.
2 – The Soundtrack
Just when you think you’ve held it together through this moving tale, the soundtrack takes hold of your heart strings and gives one almighty pull. With a traditional folk sound, whether it’s the a cappella sea shanty of “Only Remembered,” the defiant singalong of “The Scarlet and the Blue,” or the Gallic-tinged “Learning to Plough.”, you’ll be humming these and more for weeks.
3 – A Whole lot of History
The 2017-18 UK War Horse Tour coincides with the Centenary commemorations of the end of the First World War, and having walked tall with veterans and current armed forces service personnel on Remembrance Sunday, Joey and cast will transport you back to that very time. Prepare for a truly moving story.
4 – First Past the Post
War Horse has won more than 25 international awards including a huge haul from across the pond.
