Merseyside Police has reaffirmed its committed to tackling knife crime following a series of stabbings in Liverpool in the past week.

While we have seen knife crime fall significantly across Merseyside in recent years, we are never complacent because sadly we know all too well the devastation it brings and our work, together with our partners, to tackle knife crime remains ongoing on a daily basis, both visible and behind the scenes.

Liverpool Local Policing Chief Inspector Sarah Rotherham said:

“I know our communities will be concerned by recent incidents involving knives in Liverpool city centre, Walton and Speke and I want people to know that we remain committed to targeting those who choose to carry weapons on our streets and bringing them to justice.

“Despite these recent incidents, crimes involving knives have decreased. Over the last three years, serious violence on Merseyside has fallen by more than 23%, with 637 fewer offences compared to 21/22 and knife enabled serious violence has reduced by 27.8%, with 341 fewer offences compared to 21/22.

“But we have never lost sight of the work that still needs to be done. There is no place for knives in on the streets within our communities and our work continues to reassure the public and take action against those who store, carry and use weapons.

“We deploy a number of tactics including hotspot policing, which involves uniformed officers and PCSOs being deployed on regular, high visibility foot patrols within very specific geographical areas where there is an increased probability of serious violence and antisocial behaviour occurring. The latest results for our high visibility hotspot patrols are encouraging and show serious violence falling by 48.7% across the 25 hotspot areas together with a fall in antisocial behaviour.

“In addition we have used Serious Violence Reduction Orders and the work of our Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership (MVRP) and partner organisations continues to be an important way to educate and tackle the root causes of knife crime

“We also rely on our communities to be our eyes and ears and I would ask anyone with information about any of these incidents to come forward and speak to us, either directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers. I would also encourage anyone who has information about anyone choosing to carry or store weapons to get in touch and tell us what they know.

“We know that feelings often run high when incidents like this happen and I would like to remind people to avoid speculating about the circumstances and allow our investigation teams to gather the necessary evidence to bring successful prosecutions.

“We continue to rely on communities and would encourage anyone with any information or concerns to report it to us. You can call 101, direct message @MerPolCC on Twitter or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Over the weekend, an innovative education initiative in Liverpool aimed at aiding some of the city’s most vulnerable children received high acclaim by securing a teaching “Oscar”.

Led and financially supported by Liverpool City Council’s Virtual School in collaboration with Hope School, the Liverpool HEARTS Project Team earned the prestigious gold Pearson National Teaching Award.

Their commendable efforts centered on introducing trauma- and attachment-informed practices across Liverpool’s educational institutions.

Competing in the Impact Through Partnership category, the team’s previous recognition as a silver recipient in June propelled them into contention for the gold award, ultimately announced during Saturday’s grand final event.

The Impact through Partnership category celebrates schools that have significantly influenced children and staff through joint projects, providing enriching opportunities.

The HEARTS Project symbolizes a wider collaboration between Virtual School Liverpool, Hope School, Changing Minds Child and Family Services UK, and The University of Chester.

The acronym ‘HEARTS’ embodies its core values: Holistic thinking, Empowering the school community, Aspirations for every pupil, Relational focus, Trust and safety, and Shared purpose.

Hope School has been a pioneering force since 2014, dedicated to supporting children with complex trauma histories and attachment disruptions, earning an “outstanding” rating from Ofsted.

Since 2021, the school has been actively sharing its expertise with other Liverpool schools through the HEARTS project, steered and designed by Virtual School Liverpool.

Originating as a pilot program involving ten schools, the initiative has now expanded to encompass 32 schools, with noticeable improvements in inclusion and mental health observed among participating institutions.

Plans are underway for the project’s continued expansion to more schools annually.

The ten pioneering pilot schools included: The Belvedere Academy, St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Windsor Primary School, Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School, Anfield Road Primary School, Gwladys Street Primary School, Broad Square Primary School, Mab Lane Primary School, The Academy of St Nicholas, and The Academy of St Francis of Assisi.

Footy Nation will test your football skills and bring a new immersive experience to Southport in Autumn 2025.

Work to build the UK’s first football skills park, Footy Nation is underway at Ocean Plaza Leisure Park near Southport’s seafront.

Footy Nation is transforming two units previously occupied by the Chinese Buffet and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

The new immersive centre is set to be an exciting addition to Southport and the other family attractions already at Ocean Plaza, which include Vue Cinema, Premier Bowl & Laser and Playtown.

Footy Nation is owned by husband and wife Michelle Ball and Matthew Ball who want to open in Southport before rolling their concept out to locations across the UK.

Construction has begun on the new Footy Nation facility in Southport. Photo by Bertie Cunningham Southport BID

Managing Director Michelle said:

“We’re really pleased to have started the construction on the UK’s first football skills park at Ocean Plaza Leisure, and we’re set to launch this Autumn.

“We think it might just become your new favourite place to kick a ball around!

“Footy Nation will be an innovative new football skills park, with some new immersive features that we know children are going to love – but we’re keeping them under wraps for now!

“We want to create an exciting, but welcoming football-themed space, where people can have fun and improve their game.

“Football is a hugely under-catered sport within the leisure market, despite its huge popularity, so we are excited to be able to bring this concept to the market.

“This has been a long time in the making!

“We have been busy planning this for the past three years and now we’re all ready to go. We have been working very hard in the background.

“There is nothing like this anywhere else in the UK. What we’re creating here is unique.

“As a family with two children of our own – our boys are 11 and six years old – people are always talking about football themed parties, but there is not a lot of choice about what you can do and where you can go.

“Matthew and I are both born and bred in Southport. It is great to be able to create something like this in our home town. We will be right on the doorstep to ensure Footy Nation’s development every step of the way before we roll it out across the UK.

“This Footy Nation in Southport will be the first of many.

“We have been involved in the leisure industry for the past 11 years in different parts of the country.

“We have never been in a place as supportive of new businesses as Southport.

“The team at Ocean Plaza Leisure and the team at Southport BID have been so supportive towards us. We’re definitely not doing this alone.

“As Southport residents, we have enjoyed watching Southport BID being heavily involved in organising new events and attractions such as the Bear Hunt Trail and the Dinosaur Trail and others. They are always working hard to promote local businesses and to attract more people into the town.

“Southport has a huge amount to offer. There is so much investment happening, with the likes of the new Marine Lake Events Centre being built, the new Town Hall gardens on the way and the restoration of Southport Pier.

“Sothport has a unique heritage that cannot be replicated;, it is a very special place.

“The one thing it is missing is a couple of top quality indoor leisure attractions for families, and that is where we have a real opportunity to do something to add to the reasons for people to come and visit.”

People should keep checking on Footy Nation’s journey through their social media pages over these next few weeks, with lots more to come.

Michelle said: “We don’t want to give away too much just yet! But Footy Nation will feature a series of interactive football games that children can play, between friends, or between family. They are going to love it.

“We will have some brand new, bespoke designed games which will focus on various football skills.

“Watch this space!”

A Liverpool college has been admitted into the Chartered Institution for Further Education (CIFE), a status awarded in recognition of its exemplary standard of further education.

The prestigious accolade recognises The City of Liverpool College’s strong track record of delivering the skills needed in modern Britain, making it one of just a few colleges in the UK to receive the honour.

This recognition comes on the heels of the college’s recent Ofsted report, which praised its ‘Outstanding’ performance in areas such as personal development and adult learning opportunities, with inspectors singling out the student experience as “transformative and life-enhancing”.

The Chartered Institution for Further Education accepts colleges with exemplary long-term records of achievement, making this a significant milestone for the college.

The City of Liverpool College was recognised for its high achievement rate among students and its advocacy for the further education sector on a national level, as well as its phenomenal delivery for employers in generating talent for the future.

Damien Kilkenny, Deputy Principal at The City of Liverpool College, said:

“Being awarded this status, especially just after our recent Ofsted report, is a testament to our commitment to providing high-quality education and skills development.

“Gaining admission into the CIFE is not only important for the college but also for the Liverpool City Region as a whole. It demonstrates the potential for skills development in the area and highlights the college’s role in shaping the economic future of the region. This accolade is a recognition of our dedication to excellence and our strong belief in the importance of further education in shaping the future of our society.”

The college was recently invited to an Admissions Ceremony at Apothecaries Hall in the City of London where Membership of the Chartered Intitution for Further Education was conferred.

The Chairman of the CIFE, The Lord Lingfield Kt DLitt EdD DL, commented:

“On behalf of the Chartered Institution for Further Education, I was delighted to confer Membership on The City of Liverpool College. This prestigious status recognises the commitment that organisations make to upholding the highest standards in Further Education for the benefit of learners, employers and their wider communities. It is awarded only to providers that demonstrate a clear ethos of collaboration, excellence in leadership and governance and exemplary teaching and learning.”

Admission into the CIFE is a testament not only to The City of Liverpool College’s achievements but also a validation of its commitment to providing the skills needed for the future.

For students at the college, the conferral of Chartered status means that they can be assured of receiving high-quality education that meets the needs of the economy. The seal of approval from the Chartered Institution is a validation of the college’s curriculum and its commitment to preparing students for success in their chosen fields.

Local businesses and organisations that partner with The City of Liverpool College will also benefit from this prestigious accreditation. It serves as evidence that the college is developing the skills needed to re-skill and upskill employees, providing a valuable resource for local businesses to access top-tier education and training.

The zoo’s new Afterglow event will offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore the zoo and encounter 37,000 animals in a completely different light.

With tickets now on sale at up to 50% cheaper than a standard day ticket, the spectacular evenings will take place on exclusive dates between 13-25 August, from 3pm-8pm. Conservationists at Chester Zoo say Afterglow will offer a “rare opportunity” to observe animals during what is, for many, one of their most active periods just before dusk.

Visitors will also be treated to live entertainment, exciting games and activities, and delicious food and drink.

Chester Zoo - Afterglow

All proceeds are in support of the charity zoo’s vital conservation work, at home and overseas.

Anna Barker, Chester Zoo’s Senior Marketing Manager, said:

“Many will know what a special place the zoo is by day, but fewer have experienced it as the sun starts to set.

“This summer, across two special weeks in August, we’re giving people the opportunity to experience the zoo in a whole new way, and an entirely different light. Afterglow will be a special chance to explore the zoo when it’s usually closed for the evening, and to surround themselves with 37,000 amazing animals as darkness starts to fall. You may get see snow leopards Yashin and Nubra on the prowl through their Himalayan habitat at dusk, or the Asian elephants taking an evening dip at the watering hole, or watch birds as they begin to return to their roosts before dark.

“We’re really keen for families, friends and couples to make a real evening of it and so, as if the unforgettable animal experiences aren’t enough, there will also be spectacular live music and dance entertainment, as well as other fun activities, games and a tasty selection of food and drink options being freshly prepared and served up.

“Most importantly though, every ticket purchased contributes to the zoo’s vital conservation work globally, supporting us in our efforts to make the world a better and safer place for wildlife. It’s a wonderful evening out, which also does good for nature.”

A limited number of tickets are available each evening, with prices starting from as low as £20 for adults and £13 for children (3-17 years old). Zoo members receive free entry and need to pre-book. All areas of the zoo will be open, including animal habitats, tropical houses, walkthrough bird aviaries and restaurants.

The striking stage adaptation of the critically-acclaimed, BAFTA award-winning film Amélie will make its final stop at the Liverpool Playhouse, following a mammoth UK tour.

Amélie visits Liverpool for eight performances from 14-19 October, before embarking on a tour across the globe.

Amélie The Musical tells the story of an astonishing young woman who lives quietly in the world, but loudly in her mind. She secretly improvises small, but extraordinary acts of kindness that bring happiness to those around her. But when a chance at love comes her way, Amélie realises that to find her own contentment she’ll have to risk everything and say what’s in her heart.

In the lead role, Audrey Brisson returns to Liverpool, following her performance as Lucy Lockit in the original 2014 Kneehigh and Everyman & Playhouse co-production of Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and Other Love Songs).

Audrey said: “It is such a fabulous story, and I love the film it’s based on. Amélie is a fascinating character. Her imagination. Her reluctance to give up.

“She grows up thinking she can’t connect with anyone and that she’ll always be alone, yet she’s got this positivity within her. I love her positivity, her perseverance and her way of seeing a situation that’s potentially very dark and then bringing some colours into it.”

The full cast features 16 actor musicians under the direction of George Francis. George was musical director for the 2017 and 2018 Everyman productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Paint Your Wagon, as well as the current UK touring production of Blood Brothers.

Also returning to Liverpool as choreographer on Amélie The Musical is Tom Jackson Greaves, who worked alongside George on Fiddler on the Roof and Paint Your Wagon. They will join forces on the Everyman & Playhouse’s festive production Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical this December.

Gemma Bodinetz, artistic director at the Everyman and Playhouse, said: “Amélie is a magical theatrical incarnation of a film that captured the hearts of a generation. We’re thrilled to see it features the talents of former Everyman Company creatives George Francis and Tom Jackson Greaves.”

Amélie The Musical visits the Playhouse for eight performances from 14-19 October. Tickets are available by calling Box Office on 0151 709 4776 or at www.everymanplayhouse.com/whats-on.

An 82-year-old great-grandad is planning to abseil the side of Anfield Stadium for Queenscourt Hospice.

John Blackhurst, a keen Liverpool FC fan since the 1950s, has never done an abseil before but says he is excited by the challenge. He will be taking on the 100ft abseil at Anfield Stadium this weekend, July 16.

John is a proud Dad to three children, and also has nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The Southport resident founded Blackhurst Butchers 60 years ago, which is today based at Southport Market and run by his son, Tony.

John Blackhurst said:

“I am a lifelong Liverpool FC supporter and I am doing this in memory of two young men who have been lost over the past six years, who had brilliant end of life care at Queenscourt Hospice.

“Any donations are welcome, big or small!

“We believe no-one should face a life-limiting illness alone. Our aim is to give adults with far advanced, serious and progressive diseases the best possible specialist palliative care free of charge, whilst supporting their families and carers.

“The abseil came about because my daughter, Julie Rimmer, is a big Liverpool FC fan, as I am. “We were chatting one day and she said ‘they are doing abseiling experience at Anfield’.

“I thought nothing more about it but must have said I’d do that!

“And then on Father’s Day, they gave me a Father’s Day card in an envelope. Inside the card was a voucher for an abseil at Anfield as a surprise.

“I was made up!

“But then I thought if I’m going to be doing something so challenging at my age, then I should at least be doing it for charity!

“I really want to raise money for Queenscourt Hospice.

“My daughter’s husband, Stephen, sadly died at Queenscourt.

“The end of life care they gave him was just fantastic. It’s a very special place, the people who work there are amazing. We even had a birthday party there for him outside in the lovely gardens before he sadly passed away the next day.

“My granddaughter, Jade Hooper, lost her husband, Stuart, at just 31 years old. He had a rare form of Ewings sarcoma cancer and was given care at Queenscourt too.

“Stuart was in during lockdown when there were so many restrictions in place which was even more distressing but again, everyone at Queenscourt tried their best to make him as comfortable as possible and assisted in getting him home to be with his family.

“Both Stuart and Steve were both fit, strong young men who loved outdoor pursuits and adventure so it only seemed right to attempt this challenge in memory of them !

“I am determined to raise as much money for Queenscourt Hospice as I can.

“I am doing really well so far. I’ve raised nearly £500 which is a good start.

“I have never done an abseil before!

“I am really looking forward to it, it is a great challenge.

“I am a bit adventurous too and I keep myself fit. I play golf twice a week and I play bowls too, although nothing quite like this.”

Anfield will be a special place for John to do his fundraising challenge.

John Blackhurst, 82, is doing a fundraising abseil at Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield stadium to raise vital funds for Queenscourt Hospice

He said:

“I had been a season ticket holder at Liverpool Football Club for years and still go with my son and daughter and their kids now too.

I am looking forward to touching the famous ‘This Is Anfield’ sign on my way in!

“I have been going to watch them play since I first started going in the Boys’ Pen, when it was in the top corner of the ground.

“I first saw games in the Billy Liddell era in the 1950s, when I was 10 / 11 / 12. Years old. I was born in 1941 in the Anfield area of Liverpool.

“My favourite Liverpool FC player of all time was Steven Gerrard. He was always driving his team forward, he could score goals from midfield, he could pass, he could do the lot. He was brilliant.

“I also loved watching Billy Liddell, Roger Hunt, Ian St John, Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish. We have had so many great players. Kenny Dalglish has been my second favourite player.”

John has had a long career as a butcher, a trade proudly carried on today by his family through Blackhurst Butchers at Southport Market.

John said:

“I started working as a butcher for Co-Op when I left school delivering meat on my butcher’s bike up and down Anfield Road .I left there when I was 18 after working for Sparkes brothers for a couple of years I opened my first butcher’s shop when I was 22 years old on County Road in Walton in Liverpool.

“I went into business with my brother Jim which worked well as he was a Blue so we could both cover for each other on match days! ,

“Then we moved into Southport Market – We are celebrating our 60th anniversary this year!

“I retired at 65 and was delighted when Tony took over running the family business.

“I am really proud of Tony taking over. The good thing is that he has kept up the tradition of selling only good quality meat, that has been the secret of our success.

“We’ve seen a lot of changes over the years in Southport Market, but I’m glad Blackhursts is at the heart of the new look social hub it is today and everyone seems to love it.

“I have been very lucky in having such a lovely family. We all get on great and it’s my Diamond Wedding Anniversary this year too.

“They all said I am crackers doing this abseil at my age! I don’t care!”

John’s son, Tony Blackhurst, said: “I think it’s really good that Dad is doing this abseil at 82!

“He is very fit and very active for his age.

“People think it’s great that he’s doing it, and he’s raised a really good amount of money already. “As a family, we’re really proud of him and would love to see people support his fundraising appeal.”

The airport expects 635,000 passengersover the Summer school holidays.

This weekend sees the start of the busiest time of the year, for Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA), as the school holidays begin for many families from across the region.

Thousands of passengers from across the North West and North Wales are expected to jet off abroad from Liverpool for their main holiday over the coming weeks, taking advantage of the great choice of destinations available and Liverpool Airport’s award winning customer experience.

Around 635,000 passengers are due to pass through the Airport over the next six weeks making this the busiest summer season for the Airport since 2019 – the last summer before the impact on aviation of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Passenger numbers over the school holiday period are expected to be 22% higher than last year due to a number of new and additional flights.

These include a new service to Dublin and onwards connections to the US with Aer Lingus, more flights with Lufthansa to Frankfurt and beyond, a new route to Corfu with easyJet and to Ibiza, Madrid and Shannon with Ryanair.

The busiest day of the summer is set to be Friday 18 August with over 16,000 passengers expected that day alone.

Mediterranean and sunshine resorts including Faro, Malaga, Palma, Alicante, Tenerife, Dalaman, Antalya, Reus, Larnaca and Lanzarote are expected to be amongst the most popular, with passengers keen to get away from the unsettled UK weather of recent weeks, with high volumes of passenger traffic also expected on city break flights to Dublin, Belfast, Barcelona, Nice and Amsterdam.

Airport management continue to remind travellers to allow plenty of time to pass through the Airport during peak periods, recommending that passengers arrive at the Airport at least 2 hours before their scheduled departure time and to continue to think carefully about items in their hand luggage with liquid restrictions still in place.

Robin Tudor, Head of PR at LJLA, said:

“Liverpool is well known now as an award winning airport that gives passengers a great customer experience helping to get their holiday off to a relaxed, hassle free start and we look forward to welcoming thousands of the region’s holidaymakers who will be taking advantage of these benefits and choosing to start their holiday by flying from Liverpool over the next few weeks.”

Get ready for an extraordinary blend of music and theatre as the BAFTA-nominated Nicholas Renton directs I, Spie, starring a stellar cast including Dominic Marsh, Niall Ashdown, and Leila Mimmack.

I, Spie will perform at Liverpool’s Ullet Road Church Hall on Sunday, June 23, from 5pm to 6:20pm, followed by a special post-show concert at Leaf on Bold Street.

“I, Spie” is a gripping narrative that intertwines historical intrigue with the hauntingly beautiful music of John Dowland, a composer and lutenist who allegedly foiled a plot against Queen Elizabeth I.

Think “Spooks” meets “Blackadder” as the audience gets to decide Dowland’s ultimate fate. The story, inspired by Dowland’s letter to spymaster Sir Robert Cecil, imagines the gaps in history, exploring the dangerous waters of Elizabethan espionage.

Directed by Nicholas Renton, known for his work on Mrs Gaskell’s Wives and Daughters and Musketeers, I, Spie features leading actors Dominic Marsh (Kneehigh Theatre, Coronation Street), Niall Ashdown (Improbable, Kneehigh), and Leila Mimmack (Murder in Provence, Lewis). They are joined by the internationally acclaimed musicians of The Telling, fresh from winning the Audience Project of the Year Award at the REMA Early Music Awards in Stockholm.

The production delves into the life of John Dowland, a Catholic Englishman who, while traveling through Europe, was approached by English ex-pats plotting against the Queen. Dowland’s decision to inform on the plotters to Cecil is a testament to the perilous nature of being an informant in Elizabethan England.

Clare Norburn, writer and soprano for The Telling, said:

“Being a Catholic informant was dangerous – no one entirely trusted you, even if your information was helpful. Dowland’s letter reads like a man out of his depth, scared for his life – and with good reason. Informants often ended up on the gallows. But how involved was Dowland really?”

After the drama at Ullet Road Church Hall, head to Leaf on Bold Street for The Telling Unchained, a relaxed and informal concert where The Telling will perform a mix of medieval gems and traditional/folk favourites. This event offers a perfect wind-down with drinks and great music, starting at 8:30pm.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience a riveting tale of espionage and sublime music in the heart of Liverpool!
