Your Guide to going out this Mayday Bank Holiday in Liverpool
4 years ago
There’s definitely a bit more of a buzz about the May Day Bank Holiday with our favourite bars and restaurants opening back up, events taking place and – hopefully – a bit of sunshine too.
And if you want a few ideas about what you can do to celebrate three days off work, here’s just a few…
Walk in venues for drinks
Backyard new to Wolstenholme Square
California-dreamin’ just became a reality in the city, with this brand-new West Coast-inspired garden bar. A laid-back, go with the flow venue, it’s open every day for cocktails, beers, tacos, tortillas and feelgood vibes. Now that’s just the place for those wanting to chill, and definitely worth a look-see this weekend. It’s open 12 noon – 11pm.
PINS Social Club
We’re waiting for the lanes to re-open soon but PINS is still well-worth putting on your itinerary because it’s home to Liverpool’s biggest rooftop, complete with its very own bar and full-sized shuffle court!
The Duke Street terrace boasts a fab cocktail menu, sangria pitchers and table service – there’s loads of picnic bench seating – for food and drink, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the view. It’s open Monday – Friday 2pm ‘til 10pm, and Saturday & Sunday 12pm ‘til 10pm.
Maluco on Castle St
If you fancy a pornstar martini and the perfect pizza this Bank Holiday Weekend, then Maluco’s got it covered – just like it’s newly-extended outdoor terrace area!
The Castle Street venue promises the best pizza party with cocktails and beers, making it just the place for a catch-up with your mates, or spot of food and fun with your other half.
The Refinery on Hope St
Park yourself on the pavement for the most amazing food and drink – not least its rave-over roasts on a Sunday.
Grab yourself one of its famous colour changing G&Ts, or a great value three-course meal. It’s on the corner of Hope Street and Myrtle Street and combines a friendly feel with the buzz of a busy city-centre bar, just what you need during a break from work.
Boujee bar, L1
We felt like we were just getting to know Boujee when it was launched just before lockdown, but now it’s re-opened in Chavasse Park with a brand-new outside terrace available for A la carte dining (that must be pre-booked), and Boujee In The Park, welcoming guests on a first come, first served basis.
Pretty in pink with pastel-coloured picnic tables, it’s a picture-prompting paradise, decked out with flamingos, giant handbags and enormous lipsticks. It’s fun and whacky and it doesn’t take itself seriously, except when it comes to the food and drink with super sharing plates, sushi, signature cocktails, champagne and signature drinks.
Bombed Out Church Garden Bar
This has got to be one of the best outdoor places for outdoor drinks in the city, and you can’t beat it for atmosphere or the most amazing view, especially when the sun is setting. You can walk up (or book with £5 deposit which goes to the creation of a memorial garden).
The Bombed Out Church Garden Bar & Café at St Luke’s is open Friday from 1pm – 7pm, Saturday from 12pm – 6pm, extending its hours on Sunday from 12pm – 10pm – and even opening on Monday from 12pm – 9pm.
Future Yard, Birkenhead
Future Yard is serving up great drinks, food and vibes in the Garden, and you’ve got an extra day to enjoy it this weekend. It’s got everything from coffee, beers and cocktails, and there’s a great range of vegan and vegetarian food served by Hardy’s from The Big Dub Of Love food truck. Not forgetting the music, the DJs are setting the vibe from their all-new outdoor booth.
So the invitation is there: “Soak up the sun on the bleachers, a pint of Future Yard Pilsner or a cocktail in one hand, a portion of Cauli Bombs in the other, boss tunes in the air – what’s not to love?” Absolutely nothing! It’s open 12pm – 11pm Friday to Sunday, and 12pm to 6pm on Monday,
For food
Il Forno
Relaunched late last year, the Duke Street Italian is looking better than ever and it’s waiting to serve you the most spectacular seafood dishes, steaks from the grill or pasta favourites, from its fab new terrace area.
Still oozing style, the plush tables and chairs are sheltered from the elements under a great big magical marquee, so nothing can put paid to you having a romantic dinner for two, or a meal out with your mates.
Silk Rd
Sangria and sunshine! What more could you want when you’re getting together for food with friends? Silk Road on The Strand can’t guarantee the sunshine but it says if you bring the company, it will bring the tapas and drinks! You’ll also find the new outdoor terrace at Silk Road’s second site on Hope Street.
Taking inspiration from the Silk Rd trail, which spans three continents from the Pacific to the Mediterranean, it promises food, drink and soul, and its outdoor terrace is as colourful as the delicious dishes on its plates.
Baltic Market (open 11 – late bank holiday Monday)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkxO2wB6htg
Opening from 11am-late on bank Holiday Monday on top of its normal hours, Liverpool’s first ever street food market has gone outdoors to be able to serve all your favourites from gorgeous Greek Gyros to wood-fired pizzas.
Hafla Hafla has gone and got a brand-new menu too, with roasted Persian chicken and clay oven kebabs to falafel bowls and Za’tar chips (although, fear not, the halloumi fries have gone nowhere).
The Quarter
The Quarter has got the prettiest pavement seating area decorated with hanging baskets filled with flowers and bedecked with twinkling lights for even more magic when the sun goes down (and heating for when it gets a little cooler).
Watch the world go by while enjoying top food from inspired chef and owner Gary Manning, whether it’s something from the grill, pizzas, pasta, a sharing board or a deli special. And did we mention the to-die-for desserts?
Viva brazil, Castle St
Viva Brazil is doing its full Rodizio service in the new marquee seating area throughout the bank holiday weekend and you can book a table to enjoy Viva’s succulent 14 meat selection straight from the BBQ.
Passadors (meat carvers) will still move from table to table, offering the slow-roasted meats, and carving them expertly at the table. And you’re still in control over when you want to stop the service or start it again.
TriBeCa Garden, Smithdown Road
Everything in the garden is rosy at TriBeCa New York-inspired bar and pizzeria.
There’s an outdoor area with wooden benches, tables and chairs, all set around a lovely lawned area, and helping your visit blossom nicely are the fresh pizzas and fine cocktails. Great tunes and good times are guaranteed.

Rashid Johnson’s large-scale sculpture Stacked Heads (2020) at Canning Graving Dock is formed with two distinct head parts in the style of a totem. Made from bronze and furnished with yucca and cacti plants, the work takes inspiration from his series of drawings Anxious Men (2015-ongoing).
