They say smells and sounds can transport us and that is SO true for these 20 aftershaves and perfumes from the 90’s and 00’s
Whether it’s getting a whiff of TJ Hughes and suddenly crying over your dead nan or hearing Mousse T Horny and instantly being transported to a sunny childhood day and wondering how we got away with singing that aged 13, the senses are powerful.
So, let’s have a sniff of nostalgia shall we and remember these scents of 90’s Liverpool.
For the Girls
1. Charlie Red – There was also a Charlie Blue, but it smelt a bit more like yer nan so red absolutely dominated.
2. So..? – Coming in a range of scents like So exclusive, So perfect, So kiss me etc there was a So for every one of your sassy pants teenage moods.
3. Exclamation – I know you’re singing the advert… Ex Cla Ma Tion!
4. Benetton Hot & Cold – designed to look like two taps, there were two types of girls, and they could be divided into team hot and team cold.Â
5. Versace Blue and Red jeans – The tin, too iconic and probably tour first real taste into the world of designers.
6. Impulse O2 – the PE changies smelt of two things and two things only, BO and Impulse O2
7. Impulse Zen – the limited-edition fragrance to end all limited-edition fragrances. A collaboration with Ann Gottlieb, this was a classic I’m dying for them to bring back.
8. Sunflowers – You could wear it, yer ma could wear it, you could (and still can) get it from Home & Bargains. Elizabeth Arden bringing out the classics.
9. Kindred Spirit – A unisex knock off of CK1 but you could buy it in Superdrug. When this came out, people went absolutely wild for it.
10. Cacherel Lou Lou – I have no idea what this even smelt like, but lord knows I remember everyone having that iconic bottle.
Honourable mentions: Cerruti, DKNY Be Delicious, Davidoff Cool Waters, JLO Glow
For The Lads
Lynx Africa – Lynx was introduced to the UK back in 1985 but it was in the 90’s when it really got into its stride and Lynx Africa has always sat atop of the tree. And under the tree at Christmas every year since.
2. Joop – The go to for any self-respecting 90’s boy
3. Davidoff Cool Water – A shrine to masculinity
4. Izzy Miyake – You know if he wore Izzy Miyake, he had a bit of money and would deffo break your heart. The scent of a fuckboy.
5. Versace Blue Jeans – It was all about having that tin to show off to your mates that you could afford designer gear.
6. Fahrenheit – For the classy scall about town.
7. Hugo Boss – A lad walked past drowned in this and you know he’d necked half the school, including the 6th form, even though he was only in Year 10. BDE.
8. Lacoste Red – It was sweet, it was kind of nice in a 90’s kind of way and almost exclusively worn by wools trying to blend in in concert square.
9. Jazz – For the lads who had to borrow their da’s aftershave but had too much respect for themselves than to go for the Old Spice
10. Paul Smith Extreme – The smell of fit scallies before Creed Aventus came on the scene.
