FACT’s Cinema in The City is back next month

Cinema in The City, presented by FACT, brings the best contemporary cinema to unexpected locations across Liverpool and showcases emerging talent from local filmmakers with food and drink on offer from one of Liverpool’s favourite restaurants, VietNom.

Returning to LUSH Liverpool for a second time, Cinema in The City is back this April, with another weekend of award winning and unseen contemporary feature films, including three time Oscar nominee Flee, two time BAFTA nominee Ali & Ava and a film never before screened in Liverpool, A Brixton Tale.

Film fans will enjoy an unforgettable weekend of film with fresh, colourful and authentic flavours from VietNom bringing a little bit of Vietnam to the occasion.

Flee

Flee tells the story of Amin Nawabi, a 36-year-old high-achieving academic, who grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Telling an unforgettable story of self-discovery, Flee shows how only by confronting the past is it possible to carve out a future, and the universal truth that only when you stop fleeing from who you are can you find the true meaning of home.

In Cannes winning writer-director Clio Barnard’s acclaimed new film, Ali and Ava meet through their shared affection for Sofia, the child of Ali’s Slovakian tenants, whom Ava teaches. Ali finds comfort in Ava’s warmth and kindness and Ava finds Alis complexity and humour irresistible.

Ali & Ava

Over a lunar month, sparks fly and a deep connection begins to grow. However, the legacy of Ava’s past relationship and Ali’s emotional turmoil at the breakdown of his marriage begins to overshadow their newfound passion.

Screening in Liverpool for the very first time, A Brixton Tale tells the story of Benji, a nerdy boy from the Somerleyton Estate in Brixton. He spends his days keeping his stoner best friend Arch out of trouble. Leah is a wealthy young YouTuber, obsessed with street culture.

A Brixton Tale

They fall in love, but when they tempt each other into increasingly reckless behaviour for the sake of their documentary, they blur the lines between image and reality, between collaboration and exploitation, and their lives spiral out of control.

Supporting film and local talent is at the heart of FACT and Cinema in The City provides local filmmakers of the future with the exciting opportunity to screen their own short films to an audience of keen cinemagoers prior to each and every screening.

Cinema in the City at LUSH Liverpool Spa runs from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 April. Keep an eye out later in the year for further dates and announcements on new locations, exciting films and local food and drink traders.
