10 places to go for a peaceful walk this Bank Holiday Monday

Monday will be a day of quiet reflection for many of us.

Whether you’re paying respect to the late Queen or just need some time out, here are ten places we’d recommend for a few hours of peace on this unique bank holiday Monday.

Otterspool Promonade

Bank Holiday Monday

A riverside walk might be just the thing to help you enjoy a couple of hours of peace and quiet this Monday.

Take a wander down the river hugging path and enjoy the views across to the Wirral riverside.

Great for a bike ride too and an easy flat four-mile route that can be enjoyed by almost everyone.

The Georgian Quarter

This stunning part of the city takes on a serene and calming air when it is quiet, and we’d expect it to be that way on Monday.

Stand at one end of Hope Street beside the Metropolitan Cathedral and spot Liverpool Cathedral at the other.

Wander the cobbled side streets, admire the university buildings and take a seat in the pretty Falkner Square gardens, a great place to get away from it all.

Calderstones Park

Bank Holiday Monday

This park is one of the best places to enjoy a wander in Liverpool, whatever else is going on in life.

The historic 94-acre open space, which boasts ancient megaliths, and the 1000-year-old Allerton Oak is always a great place to get away from it all without having to travel too far outside town.

Watch the ducks and geese on the pond or wander through the Japanese Garden and forget the outside world for a while.

You could always extend your walk into Camp Hill and Woolton Woods if you want to go a little further.

Formby beach

The perfect place to enjoy a long walk on the endless sands, clear your head and enjoy views to the Lancashire coast to the north, and across the wind farms to North Wales southwards.

Avoid the crowds by catching a train to Freshfield and making your way down Fisherman’s Path on the ticket office side. Take care at the level crossing and join the golf course path, then onto the woods which lead to the sand dunes and then the beach.

We can’t think of many better places to spend a few hours of quiet contemplation.

Hightown

You don’t have to go all the way to Formby or Southport to enjoy the tranquillity of the Sefton Coast and forget the outside world for a few hours.

Catch the train to Hall Road, a couple of stops before the busier beaches of Formby and Freshfield and get onto the Hightown Loop.

This 6.2-mile route is a mixture of paths, minor roads, bridleways, and coastline.

If you’d prefer a shorter walk, stay on the train to Hightown station and make the short walk to the Sefton coastal path and onto the beach for sweeping views and golden sands.

Lydiate Loop

At around six miles long, this countryside walk starts and finishes at the Running Horses Pub in Lydiate.

It takes you past some of the oldest landmarks in the area and along a stretch of the old Cheshire Lines railway.

You might get a bit wet and muddy if the weather isn’t great this Monday but what better way to lose yourself for a couple of hours than a proper countryside walk?

Parkgate

Bank Holiday Monday

Steeped in history and providing some of the best views in the area, Parkgate is one of our favourite destinations for a walk

Park at the Old Baths car park, follow the old sea wall and enjoy spotting wildlife in the estuary and the views of north Wales beyond.

The walk will then take you inland along quiet country tracks and lanes, before returning to Parkgate Parade.

A great place to spend some quiet time connecting with nature.

Hoylake to West Kirby and Hilbre Islands

Enjoy this gorgeous three mile walk along the coast between Hoylake and West Kirby starting at Manor Road train station.

Pick up the Wirral Circular Trail and continue towards Hilbre Islands. You can cross if the tide is low but ensure you take guidance, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the area.

The route ends at the Marine Lake in West Kirby at the tip of the Wirral Peninsula. This man made, saltwater lake is a haven for water sports and if it’s a clear day you will be able to enjoy views of North Wales.

Sutton Manor

The old Sutton Manor coalfields provide the perfect setting to enjoy some time walking and reflecting.

Make your way through the woodlands and along the gravelled paths and take in the site of the Dream sculpture and across towards the Fiddlers Ferry power station.

Pack a picnic and after completing the 45-minute route around the parkland you can enjoy a break in an area that really makes you feel like you are getting away from it all.

Carr Mill Dam

Enjoy some quiet time with this circular walk in St Helens.

Carr Mill Dam is on the north-eastern fringes of the town and is a great place for a waterside wander.

You can spot water loving birds like herons and learn about the flora and fauna of the lake while enjoying a two-mile stroll.

A great place to take an hour or so out of your day on Monday and enjoy some quiet time and gentle exercise.
