Movema to perform in the Eurovision Parade

Movema World Dance charity are recruiting participants to perform in the official Eurovision parade taking place on 5 May 2023.

Following the success of their collaboration with all-female English traditional dance company Boss Morris, Movema is opening up their ‘Global Folk Dance Project’ to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

The ‘Global Folk dance project’ is combining the cultural dances of Ukraine, India and England to create an all encompassing project that demonstrates pride and togetherness.

Ukrainian classical folk dancer, Olena Hrabchak, will join the project to choreograph a dance to platform Ukrainian culture and the new found bond the city of Liverpool now has with the country.

Celebrating the heritage and cultures of communities in the region, the performance will include dances of Indian Dandiya, Ukrainian Bereznyanka, and English Morris Dancing.

Global Folk’s aim is to platform cultures and bring confidence within communities. With engagement with people seeking asylum and refugees, Movema encourages the participation of all.

“With the recent attacks on people seeking asylum that have occurred within Merseyside and the North West, it is important for communities to come together at this time filled with uncertainty and division. Movema aim to create safer spaces where people from different backgrounds can come together meet as individuals to deepen their understanding of each others’ cultures through fun and joyful activities that start to build the positive, unified communities we all want to be part of.”

“From our previous work with members of the refugee and asylum seeker community they would often say to us ‘we’d like to learn a dance from this place, from England’, so we got specialist training from Boss Morris and created Global Folk, a fusion of world dances and culture, the perfect opportunity for dancers of all abilities to come together to celebrate the art of dance, Eurovision, and each other.”

Rehearsals are every Wednesday at The Bluecoat from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, ending on 26 April. Rehearsals will then lead to performances at Dancing in the Park at Birkenhead park, on 29 April for International Day of Dance and the other at Eurovision Parade on 5 May!
