George’s Place Cafe Lounge in Southport enjoys ‘superb’ response since opening

George’s Place cafe lounge which recently launched on Lord Street in Southport is enjoying an incredible response since opening.

The ‘laid back, chilled out lounge’ is situated at 451-453 Lord Street, on the other side of the road to Sainsbury’s supermarket and has been receiving rave reviews from local residents and visitors to the town.

The opening has seen another quality, local independent bar join the trendy ‘Northern Quarter’ with seating available both inside and out.

On the floors above, the owners are busy creating 15 new luxury apartments as they support the growing trend for town centre living.

George’s Place proprietor Jamie Lodge said: “George’s Place is a very laid back, chilled out lounge.

“The reaction since we opened has been superb. People love it. Things have been very positive. We have had quite a few returning customers which is always great to see.

“Visitors love the quality of service that our staff provide.

“People can sit inside and when the sun shines it’s a real sun trap on Lord Street, with beautiful views. It’s a really sunny spot.

“When the sun is out and everyone is sitting outside all the way along Lord Street, it is a real show stopper.

“Our aim is to play our part in helping to rejuvenate Southport town centre and get Southport back to what it was famous for being, which was very grand.

“This is a great tourist town. It is a safe place, a relaxing place, and the perfect location for families to enjoy.

“At the moment we are not serving food but we are hoping to do so soon. People should check out our social media, here we will share any updates.

“We offer coffees, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, with lots to choose from. We are open from 9am in the morning until 10pm at night.

“We love all the events that we have here in Southport. We were very proud to see the 100th Southport Flower Show recently, and served lots of people who came to see it.

“We have some great hanging baskets outside so we definitely fit in with the botanic theme!

“It won’t be long now until the British Musical Fireworks Championship and Southport Comedy Festival; there are always lots of reasons for people to come and visit Southport.

“Southport BID works hard to attract families to Southport. We are big supporters of Southport BID, they do so much to support our town.”

Lord Street has enjoyed some major investment in recent months, with more due soon.

The Garrick won planning permission earlier this year to open the UK’s first spa theatre hotel; Harry’s Bar and Sky Bar opened on top of The Grand Southport; Wetherspoon announced its ambition to open a 28-bed hotel in Pavilion Buildings; the new Saltrock shop opened; and work continues to create a new climbing all and cafe at the Albany Buildings.

Jamie said: “We fell in love with this building when we saw it. There is so much history to Lord Street.

“We have properties on the upper floors which we are currently renovating into 15 new apartments.

“We wanted to open a unit on the ground floor and thought George’s Place would be perfect as a stylish new bar.

“Many people will remember this unit as the former Wimpey burger restaurant! They will recognise the famous doors.

“We have put lots of work into this venue, stripping the walls back to bare brick, sand blasting it, keeping the original steel, and keeping the unique original doors. We have kept everything really raw.”

The name is another nod to Southport’s rich heritage.

Jamie said: “We chose George’s Place because we are close to St George’s Church and St George’s Gardens.

“We wanted a local name which would suit the premises and would respect the heritage of Lord Street.”
