Edge Hill University celebrates record number of nominations for Student Nursing Times Awards

Edge Hill University is celebrating a record number of nominations in the finals of the Student Nursing Times Awards – ‘the Oscars’ of nursing in the UK. 

Staff, students and the University’s programmes have been shortlisted in categories including ‘best student experience’, ‘most inspirational student nurse’, ‘student nursing associate of the year’ and ‘nurse education provider of the year (pre-registration)’. 

A total of 11 nominations are in the running to win, the most Edge Hill has ever achieved. 

Professor Jacqueline Leigh, Director of Nursing and Midwifery Education, said:

“It is an amazing achievement for Edge Hill University to be finalists in so many categories. We’ve been working so hard as a School to provide the best teaching and learning experience for our students, so I am proud that we have been shortlisted in so many areas.  

“I know how special our students and staff are and how hard they work, so to see them being rewarded with this great news is really heartening. It’s spurred us on to continue creating an educational environment where everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.” 

The full list of nominations are as follows: 

Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs and Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year: Third-year student nurse Paige Rivers is an inspiration and role model to her fellow students. She is Student Union President for the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine, an Edge Hill University Board Governor and an NHS England student rep.  

Student Nursing Associate of the Year: James McGowan is excelling in both academic and clinical settings, earning respect as a valued member of his team. He has taken his personal experiences and turned them into tools for others by openly supporting colleagues facing their own challenges and sharing strategies that have worked for him. 

Student Nurse of the Year (Mental Health): Kirsten Jackson has been instrumental in implementing trauma-informed care into the undergraduate nursing curriculum. She is an amazing ambassador and role model for the profession of mental health nursing, always demonstrating passion about her chosen field. 

Nurse Education Provider of the Year (Pre-Registration): Edge Hill University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery has been recognised for nurturing the whole person, inspiring every student to achieve their full potential. 

Teaching Innovation of the Year: For implementing a dedicated Schwartz Rounds team for the School to help students process the emotional impact of patient care. 

Teaching Innovation of the Year: For the creation of theEDGEQ visual dashboard, by the nursing and midwifery senior leadership team, to display how the School is meeting its ambitious targets. 

Teaching Innovation of the Year: The Service User and Carer Group has fostered a positive partnership with patients to improve teaching and learning. 

Educator of the Year: Dr Toni Bewley has been nominated for her enduring passion to ensure that all health and social care educational programmes are inclusive of the voices of those with lived experiences of health or social care. 

Best Student Experience: The University’s Nursing and Midwifery Student Voice Strategy uses creative ways to encourage student feedback in a variety of ways including poetry and QR Code evaluation, which help to create a culture and sense of belongingness for students. 

Best Student Experience: For adopting the Civic Approach to Social and Health Empowerment (CASHE) for student placements, created by the School’s practice learning team. 

Edge Hill also successfully nominated Karen McCormick and Marijke Fenney from the NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Training Hub in the Community Placement of the Year category for providing the University’s students with excellent practice learning experience.
