Join Mersey Ferries for a Special Recruitment Open Day in Honour of International Women's Day!

Less than 2% of the world’s offshore workforce are women and Mersey Ferries plans to tackle the gender gap.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Mersey Ferries has announced a recruitment open day at the Pier Head, where they are looking to fill two apprentice Deckhand positions and possibly their first female Captain.

With a mere 2% of offshore roles held by women, Mersey Ferries is committed to changing the tide and invites anyone curious about a career on the water to stop by for a warm drink and an informative chat on Saturday 15 March, from 10am to 2pm.

These five-year apprenticeships offer recruits a unique chance to join the iconic Mersey Ferries team, starting as Deckhands and learning the essential skills needed to eventually become a Captain, complete with a guaranteed job upon completion.

Councillor Steve Foulkes, Chair of the Transport Committee, shared his enthusiasm:

“The apprenticeships at Mersey Ferries can truly change lives and are open to individuals of all ages—these opportunities aren’t just for the young. I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact of quality training, and I encourage anyone who dreams of a career on the water to apply.”

For the first time in 800 years, Mersey Ferries is on the lookout for its first female Captain, and this event is a significant step towards making that dream a reality.

Attendees will have the chance to enjoy an exclusive tour of the Mersey Ferry before the event, providing a glimpse into what a career on the river entails. Current Captains, Engineers, and First Mates will be available to answer questions and share insights about life on board the legendary ferry.

This free event is open to everyone. There’s no need to register—visit the Pier Head on Saturday 15 March to discover how you can embark on an exciting offshore career and potentially become the first female Captain of the Mersey Ferries.
