The Wirral family farm where you can pick your own tulips

Tulips are always one of the most gorgeous spring flowers and now a Wirral farm is offering visitors the chance to pick their own – and get a beautiful colourful photo opportunity at the same time.

Benty Farm in Thurstaston, not far from Royden Country Park, managed to beat the big freeze over winter to grow more than 40 different varieties of tulips.

So instead of getting flowers imported from the Netherlands, visitors can get out into the fields and choose exactly the bunch they’d like to take home.

The family-run farm opened its PYO tulip patch on Sunday April 13, and dates have been selling out with people keen to snap up the first chance to pick.

It will run until Sunday April 27, with slots between 10am and 3.30pm, and the types of tulips have been specially selected to stagger blooming.

They said:

“We have over 40 varieties of tulips, early, mid-season and late flowerers so throughout the season, the field is ever-changing. At no point in the season will the field be in full bloom, you’ll see later varieties in bud if visiting early and if visiting later you’ll see that early varieties have lost petals.”

The brightly coloured tulip patch, complete with its own mini Dutch-style windmill, is the first in Benty Farm’s seasonal pick your own calendar.

It’s already well known for its fruit picking, with fields opening in June for strawberries and raspberries, followed by Halloween pumpkins. After sowing seeds in April, the farm plants all its pumpkins out in the fields in May, seeing the first signs of growth in July. In September, the pumpkins start slowly turning orange and by October they’re ready!

The added bonus for anyone going along to pick at any time of the year is the homemade food at Benty Farms Tearooms, which has become a popular attraction in its own right since it opened in 2014.

The Tearooms, which overlooks Thurstaston Common, uses as much quality local produce from around the Wirral as possible and its homemade cakes and freshly-baked fruit scones are all made in-house by owner Charlotte Reed.

Charlotte is the fifth generation of her family to be involved in Benty Farm which was originally owned by her great great-grandfather in the 1800s, then her great grandparents, gran and grandad, and by her mum and dad.
