50 new citizens welcomed at special ceremony at St George’s Hall
4 hours ago

Today, Wednesday 23rd April, Liverpool marked a powerful moment of unity and pride as 50 people from around the world officially became British citizens in a moving ceremony at the iconic St George’s Hall—fittingly held on St George’s Day.
Organised by Liverpool City Council’s Registration Service, the event represented the final step in a personal and emotional journey for each new citizen, as they embraced a new chapter as full members of British society—right in the heart of one of the UK’s most welcoming cities.
The stunning surroundings of St George’s Hall added a sense of occasion and history to the day, as families, friends, and civic leaders gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s rich diversity and the values of inclusion, unity, and belonging.
Having the ceremony fall on St George’s Day—traditionally a celebration of English identity—made the event even more symbolic. It reflected a modern and evolving Britain, and Liverpool’s unique role within it as a city built on immigration, resilience, and a fierce sense of community.
For the city and for those becoming citizens, it was a moment of pride and promise. A reminder that in Liverpool, being part of something bigger doesn’t mean losing your roots—it means bringing them with you, and adding your own story to the city’s ongoing journey.
Today’s ceremony was more than just a formality—it was a celebration of what it means to belong, and what it means to be a Liverpudlian.
Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
“This is what Liverpool is all about, a city that welcomes, embraces and celebrates the people who choose to call it home.
“These ceremonies are powerful reminders of the strength we gain from our diversity and I’m incredibly proud that so many people are becoming citizens right here, in the heart of Liverpool, on such a symbolic day.“
Dr Mqhreen Aleem, one of the new citizens, shared what the moment means to them:
“This day means everything to me. I’ve worked hard to build a life here, and becoming a British citizen in Liverpool — in such a beautiful place, on St George’s Day — feels like a true beginning. I’m proud to call this city my home’’.
