Single celebrates Red’s title win and raises money for Hillsborough cause
HSSA's Peter Scarfe and Jay Ali

A new charity single will celebrate the 20th League title win for Liverpool Football Club and raise cash for the city’s Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance.

Former record label boss Paul Williams has come out of retirement to produce the single written by himself alongside Nicky Corson and influencer and LFC fan, David McGrady.

Recorded under the name ‘One Voice’, the three-song EP features a passionate anthem entitled We Are The Might Reds honouring Liverpool’s historic win, as well as two other tracks: L.I.V, a high-energy dance party number, and We All Live in a Red and White Kop, a rock anthem echoing the raw voices of the Anfield terraces.

A limited edition CD and 12” vinyl version will also feature Sing It Loud, a stirring tribute to Anfield Pride, with Bella and Bertie, the iconic Liver Birds, watching over the city as symbols of strength, unity and song.

Paul says he hopes that the charity single released on May 20 will go to Number One in the UK charts and raise hundreds of thousands for the Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance CIC, which offers help and tailored therapy for those still struggling to come to terms with what they experienced or witnessed on April 15, 1989.

Paul, 56, from Woolton, says:

“It all came about after I met David, who’s got a huge fan social media following, by chance and we got talking about Liverpool hopefully winning the Premier League – it was a few months ago, before the actual victory itself.

“When I said I used to be involved in music, he asked if we would be able to do a song about it if they won.

“I came home and thought about it – I’d left music alone for a while while I looked after my late father when he was ill – but I decided to get back in touch and we started to work on the track.”

He goes on:

“When we’d completed it, we wanted to find a charity or an organisation that we could get involved with, and who could benefit from it.

“So we decided to get in touch with Hillsborough charities and groups who were connected to the club, and the Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance came back to us and said they’d love to get involved and help raise funds.

“The hope is that not only will it raise money for the HSSA but raise awareness of them and the amazing work they do, now not just for the survivors of Hillsborough but any tragedy.”

Created it in collaboration with the HSSA and its directors, Peter Scarfe and Jay Ali, adds even more meaning and purpose, Paul adds.

The single will officially be released on May 20 and be available for download – and pre-order now – on Amazon and iTunes, as well as bought in CD and vinyl format.

Paul, who set up new record label 12th Man Records to create the single, David, and Nicky are continuing to work together on a full-length album, Red Noise, which is scheduled for release around late November.

The single is already gaining support from a host of city celebrities and personalities who are encouraging people to buy it.

Among them are former Brookside actors John McArdle, Tina Malone and Alexandra Pigg; Liverpool musician Thomas Lang; Band of Gold’s Cathy Tyson, and Grange Hill actor George Christopher.

Former Lord Mayor Frank Prendergast; comedienne Pauline Daniels; radio presenter Roy Basnett, and Billy and Lesley Butler have also pledged their support for the single.

George Christopher, who played Ziggy Greaves in Grange Hill, says: “The Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance is an amazing charity, and the single is a great, great song, so please, go out and buy it.”

Reds fan Lesley Butler urges the city to give it its support, while husband Billy adds: “There were a few Blue hearts broken that day along with Red hearts, so buy this new charity single.”

Paul says: “We are aiming for the single to go to Number One, which is possible – a test track we put out went all over the world, to America and Australia, within two days – and we would like to raise as much money as possible for the HSSA.

“I am hoping it will raise £1m, but let’s see.

“We have been working on this project for the last four months and now it’s all systems go. It’s a great thing to be a part of and be proud of, and we hope that Liverpool FC fans especially will buy the single to celebrate the club’s historic 20th title victory and to help a really great city cause.”
