Titled Firehawks, the exhibition opens 26 September and runs until 16 November 2025, bringing together photography, lived experience and social engagement to shed light on a deeply misunderstood behaviour.

Created by photographer Stephen King, who has personal experience of firesetting in his youth, Firehawks combines years of research and collaboration with fire services, probation teams, and mental health professionals. The exhibition draws on King’s residencies with Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, London Fire Brigade, Northumberland Fire and Rescue, and Merseyside Probation Service, alongside conversations with those affected by firesetting behaviour.

King’s approach avoids traditional documentary photography, instead adopting a dreamlike, metaphorical style that brings together collective experiences through creative visual storytelling. Around 20 photographic works will be displayed, examining firesetting as a response to trauma, especially in childhood.

Stephen King said:

“This exhibition specifically explores the complex psychology of child trauma and its connection to firesetting, offering an overview of the evolutionary aspects of this behaviour. The language of photography has the ability to bridge barriers and destigmatise what is an incredibly sensitive subject.”

“Stephen has approached the subject with a curiosity and empathy that is allowing this often deeply misunderstood and very hidden behaviour to be brought into the light in a compassionate, creative and much-needed way.”

Firehawks will be accompanied by a public programme of events, workshops and talks to encourage wider dialogue around trauma, resilience, and the important role of community services.
