Wirral designer's dress gets a film premiere after a message from Lindsay Lohan

A bestselling dress by Wirral-based fashion brand Molby the Label has had a big screen premiere following a message from actress Lindsay Lohan.

The Hollywood star got in touch with designer and brand founder Karina Molby after seeing her Bertie dress online.

She said how much she loved the beautiful black-based floral print design, so Karina wasted no time in getting one made and delivered to her.

That was four years ago – now the dress has made its film debut, appearing in Lindsay’s latest box office hit Freakier Friday.

The movie is a sequel to the huge 2003 original Freaky Friday, which also starred Lindsay alongside Jamie Lee Curtis.

Karina says she had no idea the dress was due to feature, until a customer went to the cinema and spotted it.

She explains:

“It was actually back in 2021 that I got the message request from Lindsay Lohan on Instagram.

“When I saw it I thought surely she’s been hacked, or it mustn’t be her real account. I read it a million times and in the end I thought, this could be real, so obviously I messaged her back and said, ‘you can have whatever you want!’

“She just replied and was really nice, she sent me a screenshot and said she loved this particular dress, the Bertie which is one of our bestsellers, so we got it made that day and sent to her in London.

“When she got it, she messaged back to say it was so gorgeous and really kind of us to send her one, but mentioned it was a tiny bit big so we sent another smaller one.”

That was the last Karina thought about it, until a customer went to see Freakier Friday not long after it was released.

“We had no idea what Lindsay wanted the dress for when we sent it, I just assumed she wanted it for herself, but then I got a message at about midnight one night last week from a customer saying she thought she’d seen our dress in the new Freakier Friday film.

“In the morning I checked I hadn’t just dreamt it, and I was Googling and nothing was coming up, so I asked on our Instagram if anyone else had been and seen it.

“Another customer sent me a screenshot of the dress in the film, and it was the one we’d sent to Lindsay Lohan four years ago!

“She’s not wearing it in the film, another actress is, so I’ve no idea how it’s got into the wardrobe.”

This is the second time a Molby the Label dress has had a Disney movie role – the Tilda also featured in another sequel, Stargirl 2.

Unfortunately for fans, the Bertie floral design which Lindsay has is no longer for sale.

“But we’ve had loads of messages about it so we’re going to bring it out in four or five different colours in autumn,” adds Karina. “We brought it back last autumn in a tartan and that was our bestseller last year – I think it’s our second bestselling dress ever. Customers just love it because it’s really comfortable and easy to wear.”
