The Guide Liverpool Heroes: Meet the incredible organisations shortlisted for our Emergency Services Award

When we’re in difficulty or life’s tragedies strike, we’re fortunate to know we can turn to our emergency organisations, with many involved often risking their own lives to save ours.

From the police and fire officers to the medics and rescue services, each deserves our thanks and praise for doing an incredible job to keep the Liverpool City Region – and us – safe and well.

The Emergency Services are among those The Guide Liverpool’s HEROES awards will celebrate, as we reward all those who make our city so special.

The winner will be revealed at our ceremony at Titanic Hotel on Friday, November 21, but each of them deserves special recognition, so here are our four Guide HEROES Emergency Services Award finalists.

Merseyside Police Family Liaison Team

Standing beside families in their darkest moments, the Police Family Liaison Team offers compassion, guidance and strength when it’s needed most. Building up trust, officers offer support while also taking evidence from families and keeping them informed as investigations take place into anything from murder to road traffic fatalities. Family Liaison Officers help families through the most challenging times of their lives and provide a vital role in helping to bring offenders to justice.

Merseyside Water Rescue

Merseyside Water Rescue is a volunteer-based search and rescue charity – and literally a life saver on our waterways. A brave team of skilled and committed volunteers, they operate the rescue boat around the Liverpool docks and leap bravely into action in those vital few minutes between someone entering the water and the emergency services arriving, when the risk to life is greatest through cold water shock and drowning. Established in 2018, Merseyside Water Rescue runs the only dedicated safety boat on the South Liverpool Docks.

North West Air Ambulance

The North West Air Ambulance delivers critical care when every second counts, saving lives daily. From accidental injuries to severe medical emergencies, its crew delivers specialist and enhanced pre-hospital care to the most critically ill and injured, and transports patients to the most appropriate hospital to make sure they have the best outcomes possible. Passionate and skilled, they provide vital medical interventions at the scene of an incident including blood transfusions, pain relief and more. With no government or NHS funding, the charity needs to raise more than £18 million a year to do the amazing work it does.

RNLI New Brighton Lifeboat Crew

For more than 150 years, crews from New Brighton RNLI have been launching themselves into dangerous seas and hazardous conditions – putting their own lives at stake to help save others when disaster strikes in the treacherous waters of the River Mersey and out into the Irish Sea. The station is home to a B-class Atlantic 85 lifeboat, one of the fastest in the RNLI fleet, so its fearless and courageous crews – the vast majority volunteers – can race to the rescue when lives are in danger. To date, crews at New Brighton have been presented with a remarkable 48 awards for gallantry.
