Steve McQueen’s powerful film installation Grenfell is coming to Liverpool this spring, with a special presentation at the Bluecoat.

Tate Liverpool is partnering with the city centre arts venue to bring the work to the city as part of a national tour, with the installation on display at the Bluecoat from 16 May to 21 June.

Created in response to the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017, which claimed 72 lives, the piece was filmed before the building was covered from public view. McQueen said he wanted to ensure the tower — and what happened — is never forgotten.

The artwork was first shown publicly in 2023 at the Serpentine in London, following private viewings for bereaved families and survivors. It is now being shared more widely across the UK through a coordinated tour led by Tate.

Liverpool has been chosen as a key stop on that tour, reflecting the city’s long-standing connection to social justice campaigns and community activism.

The installation will be free to attend, although tickets must be booked in advance. Visitors are required to arrive on time, as the work is designed to be experienced from the beginning and late entry won’t be permitted.

Ahead of the public opening, there will be a period of private and community viewings, with additional talks, workshops and events planned alongside the exhibition, supported by the Grenfell Foundation.
