Famous Liverpool Beatles tour named top experience in the UK by reviewers

Liverpool’s famous Magical Mystery Tour has been named the number one visitor experience in the UK by Tripadvisor reviewers.

The distinctive yellow bus tour, which carries more than 80,000 passengers a year around the city’s iconic Beatles landmarks, led the rankings in the 2026 Travelers’ Choice® Awards: Best of the Best Things to Do.

It claimed first place in the Top Experiences in the UK, and was rated fifth in the world, beaten only by tours in Porto, Hiroshima in Japan, Barcelona and an Amsterdam canal cruise.

The prestigious global awards, which are split into several different categories, were created to highlight the highest-rated experiences and attractions based on millions of independent Tripadvisor reviews and ratings over the previous 12 months.

For the Magical Mystery Tour, which is operated by Cavern Club owners Cavern City Tours, news of the accolade came as a complete – but very nice – surprise.

“We had no idea, but it was great news,” says head of marketing Victoria McDermott. “It’s based on the number of Tripadvisor reviews and the starring you get, giving you an overall ranking, so there’s obviously kudos to being number one because it reflects people’s genuine reaction to their experience.

“For us as a business getting this award does make a difference because we attract visitors from all over the world and reviews are an online word of mouth so this does affect their choices.

“It’s a real credit to the whole team, not just the Magical Mystery Tour guides and drivers, but everybody who works for the company because it includes the Cavern Club as well.

“When visitors end their tour, they can go into the Cavern whenever they want to on that day and I think quite often people are surprised by that because they’re getting a double whammy.”

The Magical Mystery Tour is the longest-running Beatles sightseeing tour in the UK, started more than 40 years ago by Dave Jones and Bill Heckle.

“They were Beatles fans but also fans of the city,” says Victoria. “Back then Liverpool didn’t have the tourism it has now, so they were really pioneering and to get from where it started to where we are now makes us very happy.”

Jon Keats, Director of The Cavern Club, says so much of the response from reviewers is down to the personal approach which the Magical Mystery Tour team takes.

“For more than four decades, our guides, drivers and team have been sharing Liverpool’s story with Beatles fans from every corner of the globe, and this award is a huge credit to their passion, knowledge and commitment,” he adds.

Victoria says although the accolade is for the Magical Mystery Tour, it’s recognition for the whole city too.

She explains:

“We do a lot of international marketing, and the city of Liverpool hero products largely are The Beatles and football, so we do collaborate with other Beatles attractions like Strawberry Field and well-known attractions like Mersey Ferries and LFC.

“We go out with our individual businesses in mind, but also the wider destination because if we can get people here they see what else there is to do.

“Most of the time they’re really surprised by how beautiful it is, how welcoming, the architecture, the cathedrals, so many things they maybe didn’t know. So they’ll come for one thing and find a million others and they’ll tell their friends and come back.

“For the city region economy it’s so important and we’re proud of the part we play in that.”
