“Its really important that young Scousers are represented” We speak to Liverpool star of The Cage, Freya Jones

Star of the BBC’s newest crime drama ‘The Cage’ Freya Jones has shared her joy at the success of her television debut.
Freya Jones, 22, portrays Emily in the show. The daughter of Michael Socha’s gambling obsessed character, Matty.
Speaking to The Guide Liverpool Freya said:
“I feel like she really sees it and she’s like ‘I need you to stop’ I think that’s all she wants is that connection with her dad and that’s why she doesn’t let go. She just wants her dad.”
“I think it’s really important that young scouse people are represented authentically, sometimes on screen or in the media there’s a representation of Liverpool and people aren’t like that.
It’s a normal place. Emily, she’s just a normal girl and that’s what I really liked.”
Freya attended Deyes High School in Maghull before joining Winstanley College in Wigan and then Drama Studio in London.
“Acting has always been what I’ve wanted to do. I got into LIPA sixth form, but it was Covid when we were going to College, so it would have been mainly online and my mum and dad were like ‘try for drama school’
“Leanne, my film studies teacher, she was amazing. She was like ‘there’s so many things you can do, so there’s different avenues I can go down if acting doesn’t work out.”
Freya spent three years at Drama Studio before booking the Cage through her old drama teacher and now casting director, Connor, shortly before graduating last summer.
“We filmed it in April until the end of July. So yeah, it’s mad. My dad helped me with the self-tape actually, thanks to my dad. They said, “Can you come back for a recall?” Luckily, that was in person, so I got the train back to Liverpool. That was that, I didn’t hear back for three weeks, so I thought I hadn’t got it. I was on the tube when Connor rang me and it was just mental.
Not her first role, Freya starred in short film ‘Halfway Down’ and stage play ‘Lambslaughter’ either side of her filming for ‘The Cage.’
“Lamb Slaughter, we only started that in January. We did a scratch night and it’s just kind of gone from there. I’m made up, it’s kind of snowballing a little bit and were getting to perform it more and the girl who’s in it with me, Erin, she was a year above me at Drama Studio, so it’s been amazing to have that experience with her as she was always so kind to me.”
Not one to rest on her laurels, Freya shared her hopes for the future:
“I’ve always wanted to be in sitcoms like ‘Gavin and Stacey’, and I’d love to do ‘Doctor Who’ . I think that would be a massive bucket list moment. I love telly, that is really what I want to do.
I got into drama when I was in school, but I did this course when I was in high school with the Comedy Trust. They came into Deyes for a free course and they taught us stand up and stuff, and I did stand up with them till Covid. From that moment on I loved comedy. I love making people laugh, and yeah, I’d love to write my own sitcom.”
‘The Cage’ is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
