More than one million journeys made using Tap & Go on Merseyrail

More than one million journeys have now been made using Tap & Go across the Merseyrail network, marking a major milestone for smarter travel across the Liverpool City Region.
The contactless system, available at all 69 Merseyrail stations, means passengers can simply tap in and tap out using a MetroCard, bank card, smartphone or smartwatch, with most travellers choosing to use their mobile phones.
Designed to make rail travel quicker and easier, Tap & Go automatically works out the cheapest fare possible for each journey, meaning there is no need to buy a ticket in advance.

Since launching, the system has proved popular with passengers looking to skip queues and speed up journeys, with more than 35,000 trips recorded during last month’s three day Grand National Festival at Aintree alone.
Steve Rotheram and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority backed the rollout with a £10 million investment, as part of longer term plans for a joined up transport system across trains, buses and ferries.
Steve Rotheram said: “Reaching one million Tap & Go journeys in such a short space of time just proves that people across our region were more than ready for a simpler, more modern way to travel.
“Tap & Go is all about putting passengers first by making it quicker and easier to get where you need to be, while ensuring you always pay the cheapest possible fare.”
He added that improving rail performance, alongside a rail fare freeze until 2027, is aimed at encouraging even more people to travel by train across the region.

Tap & Go is designed to make travelling more flexible, whether commuting to work, heading into Liverpool city centre or exploring the wider region, while also helping reduce queues at busy stations.
Passengers who prefer traditional tickets can still use MetroCards or buy paper tickets from station ticket offices, with Merseyrail saying the network remains accessible for everyone.
One important reminder for passengers using Tap & Go is to always tap in and tap out to complete your journey and make sure you are charged correctly.
