Wavertree High Street to close for World Car Free Day this September

The busy Liverpool city street will be closed to traffic and will host a family-friendly party to mark World Car Free Day 2019.

Wavertree High Street will be closed on Sunday 22nd September 2019 from 11am-3pm for World Car Free Day. As the name suggests, Car Free Day is a global event and this is the first time the city has been involved. This community led initiative is part of a wider programme of activity to revive and develop the L15 area.

World Car Free Day

Fully supported by Liverpool City Council, the road closure, traffic control and planned market stalls and promotions on the day, all tie in with the council’s stance on climate control. The World Car Free Day event also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the designation of Wavertree as a conservation area and the creation of The Rose Garden on Wavertree High Street – a local jewel and an achievement which will be celebrated throughout the day.

Taking place on Wavertree High Street, between Picton Clock and The Rose Garden, community organisation, Love Wavertree has planned a fabulous day of activities. Love Wavertree said: “Our approach to the event itself is very much family focused and basically we’re planning a big street party with bands, food, stalls and fun. We have got bands, choirs, kids stage school performances and we will have kids playing games.”

World Car Free Day

Not only is World Car Free Day an opportunity to improve air quality – albeit for a short time, it’s also a chance for community regeneration to step into the spot light. Love Wavertree said: “We have a vision for a revitalised Wavertree that responds to what the local community want. We are working to create a happy, healthy and vibrant high street, that enhances the historic environment and gives hope to the next generation.

“We are looking at community ownership, community cafe & cinema and a George Harrison Music Studio. None of this will be achieved overnight, but if we can make Liverpool’s first ever Car Free Day happen in a matter of weeks…. what can the next few years bring if we continue to organise as a community!”
