Watch as find out about Liverpool Royal Court’s free Youth Theatre

Did you know Liverpool’s Royal Court has been running a free youth theatre since 2012?

Watch above as our very own Lewis Pryor meets some of the students and staff.

The Royal Court Youth Theatre is unique in the city as it is open to anyone between the ages of 11 and 25 and there are no fees, no audition and no waiting list. If you want to get involved then you can.

As well as providing opportunities for young people to learn new skills in theatre, production and performance, the youth theatre offers a safe place for young people to have fun, make new friends and build their confidence.

The Royal Court gives the main stage to the youth theatre for their own production every summer. They are supported by the theatre’s professional technical team throughout the process as well as learning new skills in marketing, sales and promotion.

Liverpool’s Royal Court recently became a National Portfolio Organisation which means that it now receives funding from Arts Council England. With this support in place, there is potential for the Youth Theatre to expand and reach more young people.

Since it began, more than 800 young people have been through the youth theatre. The weekly classes cover a range of skills including acting, physical movement, dance, comedy and singing. They take place at the Merseyside Youth Association on Hannover Street and are run by a team of experienced industry professionals.

Miriam Mussa, Community and Education Manager at Liverpool’s Royal Court said: “We have found some really talented young people over the years that we have been running the youth theatre. Some have gone on to perform professionally and others to study performing arts. A lot of the people who come here wouldn’t have access to the arts and wouldn’t be able to follow these careers anywhere else. We believe that everybody who wants to take part should be able to so that’s why we don’t charge anything.”

Class times are:

Tuesday 5pm – 7pm  Ages 14 – 17

Wednesday 5pm – 7pm  Age 11-13

Thursday (fortnightly) 5pm – 7pm Age 18 – 25
