8 Scouse legends the 90’s teens will never forget

We love a little reminisce here at The Guide Liverpool and reliving our youth through tales of phenomenal club nights, Southport day trips and the unmistakable smell of Blockbuster on a Friday night, is one of our favourite past times.

For those facing their difficult teen years in the 90’s, Liverpool was an amazing place to grow up. Getting to town on the bus cost less than a quid, happy meals were £1.99 and a kids ticket to the latest Disney blockbuster was around £3.50. Pocket money went a hell of a long way back then. For the older ones nightlife was sweet too. Legendary club nights came as standard and copying your mates 051 mix tape in the Sixth Form common room was a weekly ritual.

It was deemed safe to walk home from town, everyone was rocking block heels and chokers made any outfit club worthy. In short, 90’s Liverpool, along with it’s JD bags and Kickers school shoes was the bomb. Here’s 8 Scouse legends the 90’s teens will never forget.

1 – The Paradox

This iconic art-deco style clock tower building, on the Ormskirk Road in Aintree was, for a while the place to be for the best club tunes around and broadcast on the Radio City network on Saturday nights for clubbers across the region. All together now….’You give me love, give me love…..sweet sweet lovin’

2 – Pleasure Island

Alright, we know it looks a bit lame to begin with, but believe us, this place was BOSS. Regardless of whether you were 8 or 18 a day out at Pleasure Island was a proper treat. Quazar, the massive play-frame with the best death slide around, the roller dome (with top deejays)  and shed loads of amusements, what’s not to like?

3 – Blockbuster, Edge Lane

Forget Netflix and chill, if we behaved, or if your fella had a car, we were treated to a Blockbuster film rental on a Friday night, and I doubt anyone who visited will ever forget the smell of the Blockbuster store on Edge Lane. The pic’n’mix that looked like it’d had been there for years, spilled out all over the floor and stuck to your reebok classic! The film cases were absolutely battered, and you’d be guaranteed someone would hold the queue up arguing about a late fee. Still Haagen Daz ice-cream pots and Titanic on two night rental for £7….yeah go on then babe!

4 – 051

Mount Pleasant club, 051 has offered modern clubbers a snapshot of just how unbelievably good it was back in the 90’s when Lee Butler hosted a one off club night back in 2016, before developers moved onto the site. But unless you were a weekend faithful during it’s decade long heyday (from around 1996 when Lee and Dave Graham joined forces) you’ll never fully appreciate how The Anthems felt!

5 – Chavasse Park

Hanging around in Chavasse Park back in the 90’s was like a little mini holiday for some teens. On a sunny day, the former scrub of parkland played host to groups of friends, first dates, sitting off with your maccies, a few bevs and even the odd festival too. We’re secretly made up to see the next generation hanging around the shiny new Liverpool One Chavasse Park site, making memories and arsing about……just remember we were there first!

6 – Quarters, Clayton Square

In the 90’s all hair accessories were bought from Quarters in Clayton Square. Yeah we know it’s still there, but the original store was like an Aladdin’s cave of fluffy bobbles, those tiny, multi-coloured hair clamps (that caused untold injuries if you accidentally stood on one) and of course the ultimate 90’s accessory, the scrunchie! Nothing in the shop was ever priced at more than £2 either. You can keep your Claire’s Accessories, we love Quarters.

7 – Riding the bus ANYWHERE for less than £1

Back in the 90’s us teens could travel from Huyton into town for less than £1, accidentally scratching the wrong date off on your Saveaway was devastating and you really could have a great little day out on £5 pocket money. Riding legendary bus routes that spanned the city region was a perfectly acceptable way to spend a Saturday and we always said thank you to the driver, even the ones who knew you’d bunked on! None of this free wifi and charging sockets rubbish!

8 – The Spice Boys

You may think that the 90’s was all about girl power, but not even Mel C got a look in when The Spice Boys hit the national media. Led by team mates, Robbie Fowler, Jamie Redknapp and Steve McManaman this group of lads donned fetching white Armani suits and lived the life of Reilly, buying sport cars, cultivating iconic hairstyles (David James) and generally ‘avin it large. Lads wanted to be them, girls wanted to date them (especially Jamie) and Roy Evans just wanted them to perform on the pitch! Good times.
