A dance charity is marking Lunar New Year 2026 with parades and performances across Liverpool
1 day ago
Movema will celebrate its 16th Lunar New Year programme with events taking place on 14, 21 and 22 February 2026, inviting people across Liverpool to take part in performances celebrating East Asian and South East Asian culture.
The programme will explore the cultural history of Lunar New Year while welcoming the Year of the Horse, symbolising new beginnings, success and opportunities for growth.
Movema is inviting members of the local community aged eight and above to get involved as performers, with all abilities welcome. The charity is particularly keen to hear from people from East and South East Asian backgrounds who would like to share their experiences and take part in creating the performances.
Those interested can join Movema’s World Dance classes, which run on Mondays from 6pm to 7pm starting on 12 January at 24 Hope Street. A Lunar New Year performance package is available for £35 and includes six classes, performance opportunities in the city centre on 14 and 22 February, as well as costumes and props for each performance.

For anyone who would rather watch than dance, the Lunar New Year parade will take place in Liverpool city centre on Saturday 14 February. Performances will also be staged at Great George Square across Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 February alongside other artists.
Movema will also deliver free family workshops on Saturday 21 February at the Victoria Gallery and Museum, offering hands-on activities inspired by Lunar New Year traditions, including crafts, costumes and props.
Project manager Pei Tong said Lunar New Year is a chance for communities to be celebrated, listened to and to learn from one another.
