A Film Lover’s Guide to October in Liverpool

30/09/2018

October of course in the film world means one thing– Horror!

‘Tis the season of Halloween and the Horror films are flowing this month. The Phil is giving us their classical spin on a petrifying picture, once again, and the ASBO cinema is doing the complete opposite.

FACT Halloween Season, FACT

The folks at FACT are masters of curating film series for movie nerds and general film goers alike. This month sees one of their series turn scary. At the City Centre Picture House Cinema this month you can catch fright inducing classics such as scary Sci-Fi’s like Alien and Apollo 13, as well as Demons, Rocky Horror Picture Show and a 40th Anniversary screening of John Carpenter’s cult classic, Halloween. Take your pick or head to them all now.

On The Waterfront with Live Orchestra, Philharmonic Hall -13th October

This is your chance to catch a multi Academy Award winning icon, in a venue that is an icon, with an iconic orchestra. Starring Marlon Brando, On The Waterfront is a 1954 classic that helped shape the Crime and Drama genres that has an electrifyingly tense score that we can’t wait to see performed live by some of the best musicians our city has to offer.

This is an anomaly for this Horror inflected season and it’s looking like it’s going to sell out, so, grab your tickets now.

Psycho with Live Orchestra, Philharmonic Hall – 31st October

This has been a staple of the scare season for some years now and it’s one that is here to stay. Alfred Hitchcock is the official master of suspense and nothing shows this off more than this Horror Thriller, Psycho. Norman Bates and his motel return to the silver screen, transforming the glorious Philharmonic Hall into something entirely creepier. The only thing possibly more iconic than Hitchcock’s filmmaking is the stabbing score that made the shower scene so famous.

This one is always a sell out, so grab your tickets now.

The Secret Cinema Club, Underground Liverpool – 31st October

The Secret Cinema Club are declaring that they are “breaking the boundaries of normal, boring cinema” with this month’s underground event on Eberle Street. The whole venue will be transformed; there are fairground games, actors and a 4D Cinema Experience. The film won’t be announced until the night, but it’s sure to be Horror classic. Fancy dress is welcome and there will even be a Secret Cinema Disco after the screening with DJs continuing the party until the early hours.

Get your tickets now.

ASBO Cinema (Halloween Edition), Camp and Furnace – 31st October

As a stark contrast to the classical scores that will be gracing the Philharmonic stage this month, we have the anarchy that is the ASBO Cinema. Never doing things by halves, the ASBO organisers have crammed two freaky flicks into one night. The earlier, more PG screening is the Rocky Horror Picture Show that people can shout and sing along too. The next is purely for those who are made of sterner stuff. The Ring is known as one of the scariest Horror films ever made and it will be teaching the rowdy crowds at Camp and Furnace a lesson or two.

Get your tickets for Rocky Horror here, and The Ring here.
