A food lovers guide to December in Liverpool

December means one thing. No. Not Christmas – Food!

Ok, maybe Christmas has a lot to do with this, but nonetheless, December is a month where you fill your boots to keep yourself warm and spend the whole month feeling full. Once again, Liverpool and our variety of eateries are on hand to make sure that your belly is full and your seasonal spirits are high.

Foodie Event Of The Month – Prosecco Festival, Camp and Furnace

December isn’t just about Christmas, it’s about New Years Eve as well, and the folks at Merchant Pizza, in association with Camp and Furnace, have got you covered. On 29th December lovers of the fizz will be in prosecco paradise as producers of the bubbly stuff from across Northern Italy will be hosting tastings and master classes whilst Nightcrawler Pizza and Maray satisfy your stomachs with a menu perfectly paired with the selection of prosecco on offer. This NYE edition of the Prosecco Festival comes after the huge success of the August Bank Holiday bonanza. The day will be split into afternoon and evening sessions worth five free glasses on offer with every ticket purchased.

Dish Of The Month – Pigs In Blankets, MARAY

Would it be Christmas without pigs in blankets? A recent survey showed it’s in the nations top 10 favourite Christmas dishes, above the likes of the Yorkshire Pudding and even Christmas Pudding. There’s nowhere better in the city get a gourmet version, glazed in Tamarind, sweet and sticky. Back by popular demand, they are available throughout December, however, you don’t have to fill your boots entirely (although we’re sure you will) because MARAY have been kind enough to provide you with the recipe so that you can continue making them into 2018.

Quick Bite Of The Month – Christmas Dinner Wraps

annual festive market that takes over the city centre throughout December and you have to, of course, sample all the seasonal classics such as kurrywurst, pork baps and delectable desserts as a quick bite whilst manically shopping. But, this year we have something to take your Christmas browse to the next level – Yorkshire Pudding Wraps. Made by a family catering company firm each wrap is made by filling a giant Yorkshire pudding with roast dinner favourites such as beef, lamb, turkey, stuffing and veg, rolling it up and then putting it on the grill to toast. Then, to finish off, add a little horseradish, mint sauce, cranberry sauce or gravy. Glorious.

New Eatery Of The Month – Crazy Pedro’s

Crazy Pedro’s has just recently taken up residency on Parr Street, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was just a bar; a wonderfully whacky bar, but a bar none-the-less. Well, of course, it is not. This graffiti smattered venue is pizza parlour with a menu as kooky as the walls in which it resides. The specials include pizza toppings like Surf & Turf, Quorn Chicken, Chips & Gravy and an edible glitter topping to celebrate pride in Manchester was pioneered by the pizzeria. And on the regular menu you’ll find Fried Chicken & Waffle, Thai Quorn Dough & the delicious Blueberry Hill.  This is something that you can expect, and much more, from the Merseyside branch. Pizza’s are also available by the slice, so tuck in! More info on the new Christmas special ‘Mary, Joseph & Baby Cheeses here.

Veggie/Vegan Venue Of The Month – Dìa + Noche

Dìa + Noche is a brand spanking new, Spanish restaurant that occupies what was once Miyagi. Although not strictly vegetarian or vegan, we have included this here as it is another place that caters to the diets, showing the progress of the diet and how it is fast becoming the norm. If you follow a veggie diet but struggle to find the best place to cater for a large party with a wide variety of eaters, then organise your group into Dìa + Noche. The venue specialises in tapas, so your meat eating companions can indulge in a steak tartar or seafood, whilst you can enjoy innovative dishes such as Heritage Roasted Carrots, Pan Con Tomate and an Autumn Salad.

(M)eatery Of The Month – Baltic Social Bottomless Christmas Feast

Christmas is all about indulging, whether you mean to or not, there will always be leftovers that you can’t help but devour, an extra glass of Baileys that it would be rude not to have. With that in mind, the Baltic Social is delivering a bottomless feast for their visitors this December. The restaurant is promising “two hours of pure excessive festive joy” and will be offering platters filled with treats such as prawn cocktail, smoked salmon, patè and soup for starters. After that you will be treated to a full Christmas dinner with an endless supply of turkey and trimmings that will keep coming “until you’re on the last notch of your belt holes”. And, it’s not just the food that is endless. You can indulge in unlimited Prosecco, or pints of lager, for the entirety of the two hours. What is Christmas without a festive tipple or 10?

The foodie fun doesn’t stop there this December so keep your eyes and taste buds on the look out for more goings on throughout the season that we will be shouting about to make sure you’re best placed to enjoy the festive period in the city.
