A mass choir charity event is happening at BOXPARK and anyone can join

A mass choir event is happening at BOXPARK Liverpool this September, raising money for two local charities, and anyone can join in.
You don’t need to be pitch perfect or even have sung in public before – One! Choir is all about the joy of getting together to belt out a song.
One! Choir is being launched by Tim Taylor, who is musical director and founder of the popular Liverpool Indie Choir.
He noticed a trend for more pop-up mass choirs happening around the country and decided we shouldn’t miss out.
Tim said:
“I’ve got the right experience and the right passion so I wanted to be a part of that,”
“One! Choir will be about making choir even more accessible because I know people aren’t always able to come to sessions every week – this is having that choir experience on one night, rather than it being a regular commitment.
“We did something similar in Camp & Furnace last September, and then an opportunity arose to do it at BOXPARK this year. They thought it was a brilliant idea and they’ve been so helpful, I’ve already got the next one booked in the same venue for December 1.”
Tim plans to hold regular mass choir events in the city, with a launch on Monday September 29 raising money for two charities – Clatterbridge Cancer charity, and Bradbury Fields which supports blind and partially sighted people in Liverpool and Knowsley.

He says it’s a chance for people to come with friends, family members or on their own and just be part of a fantastic feelgood experience.
“This year I’ve been reflecting on why I do what I do, and the main reason was it was making people happy, seeing people’s smiling faces, that’s the thing that gives me most pleasure.
“It’s such a joyous thing to be involved in, and there is no barrier to entry – if you’ve never done anything like this before, you can still come along. It doesn’t matter if you’re not perfect, not with that amount of people, and the vast majority of people are actually very capable of singing.
“The word choir tends to have a bit of a stereotype still, people think of churches and hymns and carols, and it all being quite regimented.
“With our choirs it’s about doing really cool songs and having the fun and friendships, all the exciting enjoyable things that go with group singing.”
Anyone taking part in One! Choir in September doesn’t need to go to rehearsals or even learn the words in advance.

Tim explains:
“Essentially this will be like a choir rehearsal, just with hundreds of people.
“There’ll be a big screen with lyrics on, so everyone can see the words and sing along and I’ll pick songs that people will know well. I’ll teach by ear, get us all singing verses, then split the group to sing different parts before bringing it all together.
“The arrangements are pretty straightforward and simple because we want that accessibility, and we’ll also do some singalongs and big fantastic choruses.
“By the end we’ll bring together one or two songs in harmony, and it will all be filmed so people can actually see and hear what they sounded like on the night singing with all these other people.”
Tim says mass choir events attract a wide range of ages, men and women, and people from all walks of life.
“That’s one of the things I love the most about choir, and the response we get is so heartwarming. I was getting messages for weeks after last year’s event from people saying how much they’d loved being able to sing with their partner, or with their children for the first time.”
Buy tickets for One! Choir charity night is at BOXPARK on Monday September 29 from 7.30pm to 10.30pm here.
