A Music Lovers Guide to September in Liverpool

Summer is over and festival season is almost completely wrapped up, but, fear not gig-goers, as normal service resumes on the live music line.

Although we get a feast of festivals all over the UK, and especially in Merseyside, the season can act as a disruption to the regular live music circuit. However, as soon as September hits, that all changes, as we’re about to show you in this months edition of the gig guide.

Siobhan Wilson- 12th September @ 81 Renshaw

Siobhan Wilson is coming to 81 Renshaw, Liverpool to kick off this months gig guide. Since the release of her UK debut album ‘There Are No Saints’ earlier this month, Siobhan Wilson has been featured in Rolling Stone, DIY magazine and The Line of Best Fit. She’s played a session on BBC Radio 6 Music. BBC Radio Scotland’s Roddy Hart made the album his Record of Note and, most recently, There Are No Saints was selected as Album of The Day on BBC Radio 6 Music. The album has been said to “leave the listener hooked and haunted as if falling into a dark, delicious fairy tale.” Sounds intriguing, right? Well why not had down to one of the cities best, small venues to find out more!

Tickets available here.

The Merseybeats – 14th September @ The Cavern

This is one for anyone who wants to relive the days that made Liverpool and it’s music so iconic. Pop band from the 60s, originally managed by Beatles, and Cilla Black manager, Brian Epstein, The Merseybeats. The current line-up is Tony Crane (founding member) on lead vocals and lead guitar, Billy Kinsley (founding member) on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Bob Packham (joined 1974) on backing vocals and bass guitar, Dave Goldberg on keyboards and lead guitar and Lou Rosenthal (joined 2000) on drums. Their hits include ‘Don’t Turn Round’, ‘Wishin & Hopin’, ‘Sorrow’, ‘I Think Of You’, all of which contributed to the formation of the Merseybeat sound.

Head to the Cavern website to book your ticket.

John Legend/Jack Savoretti – 17th September @ Echo Arena

For this months big hitter, John Legend comes to the Echo Arena supported by Jack Savoretti, a hugely successful artist in his own right. Therefore, Legend’s latest tour, Darkness and Light, offers amazing value for money with the fact that you’re getting two big names for the price of one! John Legend is an amazingly talented vocalist, pianist and songwriter who has done a fantastic job of becoming a household name whilst maintaining relevance in the more credible corners of the R&B/Soul scene, something that he can probably attribute to the quality of his songs and various appearances on the silver screen. Savoretti is a perfect, heartthrob of a support, getting you all warmed up for a night of soul and love songs.

Head to etc Echo Arena website to sort your tickets.

The Jesus & The Mary Chain – 21st September @ 02 Academy

Scottish alternative rock band The Jesus & Mary Chain, most famous for albums such as Psychocandy and Honey’s Dead, who changed the face of alternative punk during the eighties and early nineties come to the O2 Academy this month. Though the supporting players drift in and out of focus, the heart of the Mary Chain remain vocalists and guitarists William and Jim Reid, Scottish-born brothers heavily influenced not only by underground legends like the Velvets and the Stooges but also by the sonic grandeur and pop savvy of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson. This could be another for fans of the old school. Support comes from Liverpool band Sugarmen too – winning!

Some tickets still available here.

Lucy Spraggan – 27th September @ The Arts Club

First coming to main prominence in 2012 with her self-composed song ‘Last Night’ on ITV’s The X Factor, Lucy went on to reach 9th place in the competition, and 2nd place in her category. Since then she’s continued to grow a devoted fan base through her busy live schedule and three top 40 chart albums. With a unique style of acoustic folk and pop, Lucy mixes humour, talent and honesty to create her own fresh sound. She has also created some epic Adele-esque anthems. She comes to The Arts Club as part of her UK tour at the end of this month.

Head to the Arts Club website to get your tickets.

Liverpool International Festival of Pyschedlia – 22nd – 24th September @ The Baltic Triangle

Thought we were done with festivals? Well, that’s not entirely true. The International Festival of Pyschedlia is always a highlight of the year in the city for music and art, as well as celebrating the weird and wonderful. Taking over magical setting of Camp and Furnace for the weekend, we will be treated to amazing visual arts, interesting instillations and a host of bands and artist including the likes of The Black Angels and Jane Weaver. The festival may seem like a cult thing, but trust us, it’s an exercise in culture that should be embraced by all, especially as our culture quarters grow even more.

Texas – 29th September @ The Philharmonic Hall

This Glasgow based band have been playing their mix of rock, soul and new country sounds since they formed in 1986 by bassist Johnny McElhone. With the release of White On Blonde in 1997 they became major stars, propelled by huge pop hits such as Say What You Want and Black Eyed Boy. Bands such as this come sometimes just disappear after such huge success, however, listeners can still enjoy the classic mix of Sharleen Spiteri’s distinctive vocals with an experienced band as they tour the UK on the 20th anniversary of their hit album.

Juanita Stein – 30th September@ The Buyers Club

Juanita Stein is the vocalist of Howling Bells, a cult trio that found great success in supporting bands such as Placebo. The band took a break while her first child was born, and in doing so, Stein began to pen some new material that she saw more suited for solo releases. Stein says her solo work is “is an ode to the dark heart of America. Of times gone and times to come. Dusty trails, a whimsical 50s suburbia and the haze of the 1960s. The music of Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Lee and Nancy and Patsy Cline all informed my musical sensibilities. They opened up this wide screen universe for me.” As with Siobhan, earlier in the list, if not already a fan of the music, this is one to see if just purely out of intrigue.

Tickets available from Skiddle

Loyle Carner – 30th September @ The Arts Club

Dubbed by The Guardian as ‘the sentimental face of Grime’, South Londoner Loyle Carner is an actor turned rapper. With a drama degree behind him, it seems rap has become his real destiny. His sound has a laid-back flow and beats that combine with old school hip-hop and UK influences. Following a tour and collaboration with spoken word artist Kate Tempest on her single ‘Guts’, Loyle went on to support Nas at the O2 Arena, before setting to work on his debut album; 2017’s ‘Yesterday’s Gone’. This is the cherry on the top of what is already an incredibly diverse cake for this months guide to gigging in Liverpool.

Tickets booking this way.
