A unique and immersive theatrical experience is heading to Shakespeare North this August

A unique and immersive theatrical experience that places children at the heart of the action is set to arrive at Shakespeare North this August, following a successful national premiere and widespread acclaim across the UK.

The Story Forge: Make Your Own Myth is an innovative, all-ages production created by award-winning theatre makers Rubbish Shakespeare Company in collaboration with the acclaimed Silly History Boys. This interactive, family-friendly show invites audiences to take part in the storytelling process, resulting in an entirely new performance each time.

The production blends clowning, physical comedy, and live music to craft an hour of high-energy, original theatre. At its heart are three imaginative tales developed live on stage: the mythical origin of the local area, the story behind a mysterious donated object, and a classic hero’s journey—where a young audience member may find themselves stepping into the spotlight.

Guided by two eccentric history professors and a live musician, audiences are encouraged to unleash their imaginations. Whether inventing a Norse god of dog poo bags or pondering whether Marmite was an ancient curse, no two shows are the same. Each performance evolves with the audience’s input, using a flexible scripted framework and an array of inventive, low-tech props.

This marks the first live collaboration between Rubbish Shakespeare Company—known for their successful UK tour of Romeo and Juliet, with extended runs at Leeds Playhouse and London’s West End—and the Silly History Boys, popular for their podcast series. Together, they bring a vibrant energy and a commitment to accessible storytelling for young audiences.

Lee Hithersay, Artistic Director of Rubbish Shakespeare Co. said:

“It’s been a blast! Sharing the stage with these amazing children is incredible, you really see them light up and come alive. As a performer, this has been one of the most fun and rewarding shows I’ve ever been a part of. Honestly, the kids steal the show every time, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! They’re the real stars, not us.

“You really see how naturally storytelling comes to kids. We created The Story Forge largely because children just aren’t being exposed to enough new stories. That New National Literacy Trust study really hit home – only 35% of 8–18-year-olds actually read for pleasure? That’s crazy!

We think a big reason is the lack of fresh, original stories out there for them. So we’re doing our bit to change that by creating three brand new stories every show!”
