Afternoon rock and pop choir gigs are coming to the Bombed Out Church
5 months ago
The Bombed Out Church is making the most of the gorgeous weather with afternoon drop-in rock and pop choir gigs over the next few weekends.
The church is keen to do more community-focused events to get all ages inside the building and finding out more about its history.
Even though it’s one of the city’s best-known landmarks, lots of people from Liverpool as well as visitors aren’t aware of its heritage.
So more community dates are being put on which aren’t ticketed so everyone can just come and go as they like, enjoy the music and then hopefully dig a bit deeper into the backstory.
The first of two choir concerts is happening on Saturday June 22 when the popular Liverpool Indie Choir will be filling the Bombed Out Church with their rendition of songs from artists including Radiohead and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
The gig, which will feature around 45 singers, will be on from 3.30pm and last for 45 minutes. It’ll be a laidback performance with some seating, and no tickets are needed although people can make a donation on entry.
On Sunday July 7, it will be the turn of the Childwall-based Wall of Sound Community Choir to take centre stage with a more poppy set including hits from Lady Gaga, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and George Ezra.
Their gig will be on from 1pm to 1.45pm and again, there’s no need to book – just drop-in and watch.
Sarah-Louise Jones at the Bombed Out Church says the two concerts will have an eclectic mix of music for everyone to enjoy.
She says: “We’ve recently been awarded heritage funding so we’re looking at different ways we can do things in the church to engage people with the heritage of the site.
“So many people come past our venue every day and some will just pop their heads in but don’t actually stay or find out any more. What we want is to put on events which don’t just get people here, but keep them in the building for longer so they then have time to ask questions and really soak up all the history that the church has.
“We want people to have the opportunity to talk and learn more because the church isn’t just a community space, it’s also a reminder of what happened in the city during the war.”
In addition to the two choirs, the Bombed Out Church also has an Open Air Mediation on Wednesday July 10 from 7pm-8pm and workshops with Movema Community Dancers on Saturday July 27 between 2pm and 3pm.
The workshops are open to all ages and abilities, so everyone can come together and join in dance moves from around the world, and although it can be booked online there will also be a session where you can just turn up and take part.
