We started and ended our first day at Aintree with blue skies and some thrilling action on the racecourse, but by far the most impressive thing about Grand Opening Day 2019 was the atmosphere. The rain came down by the bucket load from lunch time as race-goers from across the country poured through the gates and into the stands for the first race of the festival.
The April showers didn’t deter thousands of guys and girls from donning their best outfits, sipping champagne and having a flutter at the Tote. With a brilliant line up of live entertainment including local bands, singers and guest speakers, Aintree Racecourse was buzzing with excitement before the first race had even begun.
There was also a host of famous faces on the racecourse today including Samantha Quek, Laura Wright, Sir Kenny Dalgleish, the Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Phillips Tindall and BBC Football Focus and Breakfast’s Dan Walker.
Our Jay caught up with Skybet’s Michael Shinners for some all important racing tips while Soprano Laura Wright braved the wind and rain to begin the festival with the national anthem. The first win of the festival went to Kalashnikov who surprised the bookies to beat favourite La Bague Au Roi. Exactly the kind of drama we all love about Aintree.
Our Kate got in and amongst the glamorous crowds to find out exactly what keeps people coming back to the Grand National, year after year. From families, groups of friends, colleagues and visitors from overseas, a trip to Aintree is a must according to todays crowds.
The Grand National isn’t just about the horses on the track! Jay met Danielle from Stand Tall, the Merseyside mounted police horse charity. With a presence at Aintree right across the weekend and acting as a chaperone for the Randox Health Grand National winner on Saturday, these magnificent animals play a key role in local policing. Make sure you stop by to get your picture taken with the golden wings this weekend.
The Mersey Beats belted out all our favourite Fab Four tracks shortly after The Glancing Queen won the final race of a truly exciting day. With Merseyrail providing services every 7 and a half minutes before and after the races, hundreds donned their free flip flops and headed into the city to continue the party.
There’s still so much to come! The weather for Fabulous Friday is looking good, our Jay might even have a suit and someone will be going home with a Range Rover Evoque as the Ladies Day Style Award gets underway.
If you are heading to Ladies Day tomorrow check out our ultimate guide to all of the action here. There are limited tickets available at the venue too, plus, don’t forget to enter this year’s Style Award – all the info on that here.
