Anfield patient among first to receive revolutionary prostate therapy
2 hours ago

The Urology team at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital is transforming the lives of men across the North West with a pioneering treatment for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH)—a condition affecting more than a third of men over 50.
The hospital is now offering REZUM therapy, a minimally invasive procedure that provides relief from BPH symptoms such as frequent and painful urination, especially at night. The condition, caused by an enlarged prostate, often leads to reduced quality of life and, in some cases, complete urinary blockage.
Unlike traditional treatments like Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), which can result in sexual dysfunction, bleeding and incontinence, REZUM takes around 10 minutes and allows most patients to return home the same day with minimal side effects.
The treatment works by delivering steam directly to excess prostate tissue, which is then absorbed by the body over time, relieving pressure and restoring normal urinary function.
Howard Trust, 69, from Anfield, was among the first to receive REZUM therapy.
He said:
“I couldn’t believe how simple the procedure was. I felt fully supported throughout the process, and the best part is, the pain is gone, and my symptoms have completely disappeared. I’m back to playing golf and enjoying full nights of sleep again.”
Mr Matthew Liew, Consultant Urological Surgeon and Deputy Clinical Director for Innovation at UHL Group, said:
“We’re excited to offer REZUM as a new, less invasive option for men suffering from BPH. This innovative therapy provides an opportunity to offer more personalised care, helping men regain control over their health and quality of life.”
The therapy, approved by NICE, is being piloted at UHL Group by Mr Liew and fellow Consultant Urologist Mr Srinivasa Viswanath, who have now successfully treated over 25 patients.
The initiative is supported by NHS England, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, and Health Innovation North West Coast, alongside UHL Group’s Innovation team, led by Dr Andrew Rose.
