Birkenhead town centre to re-open in time for Christmas
35 minutes ago
Key areas of Birkenhead town centre are set to re-open in time for the Christmas shopping season.
In the coming days Grange Road is set to be cleared of fencing and fully open for shoppers while the Europa car park will also be back in use.
The works on Europa Square Car Park are due to be completed on Friday November 21 to be fully open on November 22, providing around 100 car parking spaces.
Then the following week will see Grange Road works move ahead with all fencing removed and majority of the works will be completed 28 November with it reopened on 29 November.
These updates coincide with the announcement that there will be free car parking in the two council-owned multistorey car parks in Birkenhead in the run-up to Christmas.
From 1st December drivers will be able to park for free at the car parks in the Pyramids and Conway Street multi storey car parks. This free parking will continue throughout December.
Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, said:
“Since becoming Leader, I have been determined to get Birkenhead back open and welcoming again. I promised I would have it open for Christmas and we have.
“Reopening Grange Road is an important milestone, but just as important is making it easier for people to come into the town centre. That’s why we’re offering free parking throughout December in both our Birkenhead multistorey car parks.
“I want families to be able to visit without worry, enjoy the festive events, and support the brilliant local traders who work so hard all year round. This Christmas is a chance for people to return to Birkenhead, see the difference, and help us rebuild confidence in the town centre.”
A programme of events being lined up in the weeks running up to Christmas is set to attract more shoppers into the town centre and includes the return of the hugely popular and successful Youth Market on Saturday December 13, which will see scores of young local traders taking part with lots of gift ideas, as well as music and entertainment on the day.
Additional festive events such as Santa’s Grotto and Elf School, a record fair, craft market, free children’s fairground rides and a visit from Elsa, Anna and Olaf among others will be taking place, as well as a drop-in from The Grinch – more details of these and other attractions will be released soon.
Further work towards the completion of the improvement programme will be taking place across the town centre but is being coordinated with our delivery partner Graham Construction to allow maximum access for shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.
However – the project has not ended: all areas which still require completion activities to bring them up to finished standard, as well as some final additions such as benches and planting, will be completed in the New Year.
