Liverpool’s Royal Albert Dock will host a world-renowned light installation this spring, bringing the magic of the Northern Lights to the city for the first time.
From 20 – 30 March 2025, visitors can experience Borealis, an awe-inspiring display that has captivated audiences across the world.
Kicking off on the first day of spring and concluding with the start of British Summer Time, this free ten-day awe-inspiring spectacle will serve as a symbol of seasonal change, celebrating the arrival of the longer, brighter days ahead, and offering a must-see attraction for visitors.
Created by artist Dan Acher, Borealis combines technology and the elements using beams of light to travel through cloud particles, creating a magical illusion of the Northern Lights. With nature having the final say of the effects of the artwork depending on the wind variations, humidity and temperature, the installation is completely unique yet consistently mesmerising every time, inviting visitors to slow down and look up together at the incredible illusion.
Having exhibited in over 40 cities across Europe, Australia, Asia and the US, including Tokyo, Melbourne and Paris, Borealis has captivated audiences across the world, even gaining a permanent installation at Singapore’s iconic Gardens By The Bay Supertrees.
Now, this acclaimed artwork is coming to the dock’s historic Hartley Quay, offering a major attraction for both local residents and tourists. The immersive experience will be further enriched by the stunning backdrop of Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, cementing the dock’s reputation as a leading cultural destination.
Available to see during the evening across the ten days, visitors can stroll along the cobbled street and gaze up at the magical phenomena, which will be accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack by French composer Guillaume Desbois, further enhancing the ambience of the light and sound experience.
Out of town visitors wanting to make the most of their time in the city can stay at one of the dock’s two on-site hotels, Holiday Inn Express and The Premier Inn, offering a comfortable stay in the heart of the action.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic evening stroll or a memorable family outing, Borealis is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a shared unforgettable experience and witness the magic of the Northern Lights right here in Liverpool.
