Cast unveiled for The Legend of Rooney’s Ring at Liverpool’s Royal Court

A brand new comedy is set to take centre stage this summer as The Legend of Rooney’s Ring brings magic, mayhem and Merseyside humour to the Royal Court.

Penned by Motherland and Amandaland writer Helen Serafinowicz, the show marks her debut as a playwright—and promises to be one of the highlights of Liverpool’s theatre calendar.

Leading the cast is actor and comedian John May, making his Royal Court debut as Wayne—a brave warrior on a riotous quest to reclaim love, honour, and a very important ring. Starring alongside him is Emma Grace Arends as C’leen, the kingdom’s most beautiful woman and a bricklayer’s daughter from Crocky.

Also joining the cast are Royal Court favourites Lindzi Germain as Queen Colette and Keddy Sutton as the irrepressible Nana.

Directed by Stephen Fletcher and with design by Olivia Du Monceau, the show reimagines sword-and-sorcery epics with a distinctly Scouse twist. Packed with original songs, off-the-wall characters, romance, and the theatre’s signature wit, The Legend of Rooney’s Ring is inspired by a “half-true rumour” and a pop culture myth that sees Wayne set off on a noble (and slightly ridiculous) mission after C’leen hurls his ring far, far away.

Promising laughs, adventure and a healthy dose of Royal Court irreverence, the show opens this summer in Liverpool.

Executive Producer Kevin Fearon says:

“It’s our mission to put Liverpool stories on stage, and there is no greater Liverpool love story than this. We’re delighted to be welcoming Helen Serafinowicz to the Royal Court family. The show is very, very funny – think our Christmas show but with better weather! It’s never been more important for us to give our audiences a good laugh and a great night out, or afternoon if they decide to come for a matinee. Tickets start at £17 because we’re committed to making performances available for everyone”.

Book tickets on the Royal Court Theatre website.
