Celebrate Burns Night in Liverpool: The Who, What, Where, When and Why?

Looking for a reason to go out for a few drinks on Wednesday night? Well look no further! Celebrate Scotland’s national poet with a Whiskey or two this Burns Night.

Celebrate Burns Night in Liverpool! Raise a glass to Scotland’s most famous poet and lyricist, Robert Burns on his birthday, January 25th and get bust off your kilt for a traditional haggis supper.

Now you might not be the biggest poetry fan but we guarantee you’ve gotten into the party spirit thanks to Burns’ writing. Do the words ‘Auld Lang Syne’ ring any bells? Yep, he wrote the traditional New Years Eve song alongside a string of romantic poems and songs that inspired generations to come following his death in 1796.

The 18th Century poet is known by a number of different names including Rabbie Burns and the Bard of Ayrshire, and he narrowly beat William ‘Braveheart’ Wallace to be named as the greatest Scot in a poll ran by STV in 2009. He’s kind of a big deal!

What started out as a group of friends in Scotland honouring Rabbie Burns’ career, has now grown into a nationwide celebration with theatrical recitals and speciality menus for everyone to join in, and celebrating Burns Night in Liverpool has never been more fun.

Admittedly haggis isn’t for everyone, so we’ve rounded up a few different traditional Scottish dishes for you to give a go.

A Taste of Burns

Sow Your Oats

If you’d rather give the haggis a miss then why not start your day off with a nod to the traditional Scottish breakfast instead? One of the city’s finest coffee makers, Bold Street Coffee offer a range of breakfast dishes which they switch up regularly to keep us going back for more. Our absolute favourite recently has been the gingerbread porridge and the traditional oats with coconut and mango toppings. Porridge is also a great stomach liner if you’re gearing up for a night on the whisky!

A Wee Dram

No Burns Night would be complete without a wee dram (which in case you didn’t know is just an eighth of a fluid ounce) of Scottish Whisky. Dedicated whisky bar, MacKenzies, on the corner of Rodney Street and Leece Street has more than 300 different whisky’s in stock, so why not pull up a comfy chair, order some nibbles and toast the Bard of Ayrshire in the most authentic way possible!

Let Them Eat….Salmon!

Scottish smoked salmon is said to be among the best in the world, and with hundreds of miles of coastline and fishing heritage that goes back generations, we’d expect nothing less. Head down to the Dale Street Eatery – Delkery this Wednesday and indulge in a smoked salmon breakfast/brunch (served all day) that will tide you over until tea time. With fresh ingredients, a chilled out atmosphere and lovely staff, we reckon Rabbie Burns himself would love it!

The Board of Ayrshire

Why not host your own Burns Supper at home? Macsweens, revered as the best producer of haggis, offer a range to cook at home from most major supermarkets (they recently made the worlds most expensive haggis which includes Wagyu beef, white truffles and 24 carat gold sprinkles….for a mere £4k!). An Evening with Mr Burns
