Ever wondered what it’s like backstage at the theatre? Well now you can see for yourself with a tour of the Liverpool Everyman Theatre.

The Liverpool Everyman Theatre is turning 60, and the new award-winning building will be 10, on Saturday 23 March.

To celebrate, the theatre will open its doors, inviting audiences to join free Backstage tours, Q&A sessions, and family-friendly activities across the building.

The day will begin with the unveiling of the Frederick Douglass plaque, a permanent installation designed by Liverpool-born artist Vicki Opomu, to commemorate and honour Douglass’s legacy.

Following the unveiling, people will be able to discover parts of the theatre that are usually closed off to the general public, including visiting the wardrobe and other backstage areas as well as accessing the auditorium from the stage. BSL interpretation is available for the tour from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm, but please do book in advance.

Additionally, specialist technical talks provide exclusive access to the grid and substage areas. Multiple drop-in sessions throughout the day, led by the theatre’s talented staff, will focus on an array of theatre topics.

Join beloved panto legend Adam Keast for a Q&A session, hosted by Ngunan Adamu, the producer, and presenter of BBC Radio Merseyside’s programme. Then delve into a discussion on The Legend of Ned Ludd alongside its playwright, Joe Ward Munrow, and the cast, who have just started rehearsals.

Meet the Young Everyman Playhouse (YEP) Young Advisors to gain insight into their collaborative efforts with young people, as well as engage in discussions with resident visual artist Ali Barker on her upcoming exhibition.

Children’s workshops will take place throughout the building, and an archival area hosted by Liverpool John Moores University will offer a glimpse into the Everyman’s past. A tea party inviting the people depicted on the Portrait Wall on the front of the Everyman will bring the Open House to a perfect end.

Mark Da Vanzo, CEO for the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse said:

“We can’t wait to open our doors to all as we kick start our 60th year of celebrations at the Everyman. It’s always a joy to share insights into what we do and reveal some of our backstage secrets, with tours, talks and activities across the whole building. The Everyman means so much to so many, and as current custodians of this iconic venue, the team and I are really looking forward to welcoming you.“

A full schedule of events for the Everyman Open House will be available on Wednesday 13 March on the Everyman website. BSL for Backstage Tour and The Legend of Ned Ludd requires pre-booking, but others will be available to book at the box office on the day.
