ChessFest is bringing Chess to Liverpool ONE’s Chavasse Park this month

Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC), a charity that uses chess to help children’s educational and social development, is pleased to announce a one day takeover of Chavasse Park, Liverpool ONE, as part of Chess Fest.

Chess Fest is a three day nationwide event which encourages kids and adults to get ‘on board’ with the great game of chess.

Taking place on 18th July in association with Liverpool Chess Club, thought to be one of the oldest chess clubs in England, the fun-packed event which draws on the chess theme of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” will be mirrored with a sister event in London’s Trafalgar Square, with big screens broadcasting live from each event.

Recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the best parks in the world, Chavasse Park will be transformed for the one day event.

At 2pm, members of the public can watch and get involved as Liverpool ONE takes on Trafalgar Square in an online chess challenge. This will be followed at 3pm by a game between child chess prodigies Shreyas Royal (UK) and Tani Adewumi (US), and other matches throughout the day between some of the UKs top players.

Activities taking place between 11am and 4pm include:

  • A headline chess game between feted child chess prodigies Shreyas Royal (UK) and Tani Adewumi (US) alongside countless Chess Grandmaster matches
  • Free chess lessons for children and adults from professional chess teachers and local expert players
  • 50 chess tables for 100 children and chess fans to play each other
  • Simultaneous chess display – chess master playing against up to 20 people
  • Blindfold Chess exhibition
  • Giant chess boards for people to play on
  • Giant screens broadcasting online games between players in London and Liverpool

Lewis Carroll’s famous work celebrates its 150th anniversary of publication this year, and children attending are encouraged to dress up as the book’s characters. The event at Liverpool ONE will take place from 11:00am – 4:00pm.

Donna Howitt, Place Strategy Director at Liverpool ONE, said:

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be hosting ChessFest here at Liverpool ONE – there’s a whole range of activities going on throughout the day, appealing to all abilities, from complete novices through to professionals, so we’re really excited to be at the centre of the action.

“The event is part of our packed summer calendar which kicks off this month, offering a place to soak up the summer and enjoy long overdue quality time with family and friends as we all begin to return to normality.”
