Chester woman supports Clatterbridge Fairy Appeal after overcoming breast cancer

A Chester woman is supporting Clatterbridge Cancer Charity’s Fairy Appeal as she looks forward to a happy Christmas following treatment for cancer.
Vicky Green was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer a year ago and has undergone chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy in 2024.
Now the 31-year-old is excited for the festive season and has dedicated a Clatterbridge Fairy to her mum Sue.
Vicky said: “I am a Christmassy girl through and through and I am glad that the last 12 months have come full circle, and I can really enjoy Christmas this year.
“That is why I am supporting this year’s Fairy Appeal to support the one in two across Merseyside and Cheshire who will be affected by cancer.
“I am dedicating my Fairy to my mum, as I couldn’t have done this without her.”
Vicky was watching the Great British Bake off on television in October 2023 when she noticed a lump.
After multiple tests, her diagnosis was confirmed just before Christmas. A planned dream holiday to South Africa with then partner, now fiancée, Mick was cancelled, and the couple were left to deal with news of the diagnosis.
Vicky said: “Christmas is my favourite time of year and here I was having to share the news of my diagnosis and that I would not be travelling to South Africa to spend it with our loved ones over Christmas.
“The hardest person to tell was my mum. She works at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral, in the administrative services team within the breast department, so it was all very close to home.”
Despite the challenges, Vicky found huge support and excellent care at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
She explained: “From January to May of this year, I received chemotherapy at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral. Spending so much time there, I really got to know the nurses on the Delamere Ward. They were all so lovely, especially as my partner Mick, who works in the army, couldn’t be with me.”
After cancelling their dream holiday so Vicky could concentrate on her treatment and surgery, the couple managed to enjoy some days out and Mick proposed at the top of the Great Orme in Llandudno.
She said: “He had planned on asking me to marry him in South Africa, but Llandudno was just as amazing.”
Now, the couple are planning their wedding for July 2026 and are grateful to be able to enjoy Christmas this year with family.
Vicky has been a keen supporter of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and joined members of the team during a festive event in Chester to spread word of the appeal.
Megan Owen, Fundraiser at Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “We were so thrilled to see Vicky in Chester and we would like to say a huge thank you to her for supporting the 2024 Fairy Appeal.
“This is a very special appeal that sees families across Merseyside, Cheshire and beyond dedicating a virtual Fairy, in memory of a loved one, to say thank you to a member of staff or celebrate someone special.
“Every dedication and donation through the Fairy Appeal supports the one in two people affected by cancer in our region and we are truly thankful to all those who support this appeal, and our charity throughout the year.”
The Fairy was designed by Charity Patron and world renowned artist Emma Rodgers. Megan added: “We would also like to say a big thank you to Emma for her dedication to the Fairy Appeal and creating a beautiful and unique design.”
