Chilling ghost story The Woman in Black is set to return to Liverpool Playhouse
1 year ago
The legendary production of Susan Hill’s chilling ghost story is set to thrill audiences on the Liverpool Playhouse stage this Christmas from Tuesday 5 December – Saturday 30 December 2023.
Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt, Susan Hill’s best-selling novel, The Woman in Black, tells the story of a lawyer Arthur Kipps, played by Malcolm James, obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’.
He engages a young actor, played by Mark Hawkins, to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul.
Over 33 years, the show has played more than 13,000 performances in the West End and been seen by over 7 million people in the UK.
Directed by Robin Herford, with designs by Michael Holt and lighting by Kevin Sleep, it promises to immerse the audience in a world of unrelenting fear and suspense as they follow the journey of Arthur Kipps and the enigmatic Woman in Black.
The Liverpool Playhouse, a Victorian theatre built in 1866, is the perfect setting to watch this show, given its rich history and ghostly tales.
Legend has it that the main ghost is named Elizabeth, a former cleaner, who tragically met her end on stage in 1897. Her spirit is said to haunt the gallery level, particularly seat A5, which is always cold and spooky.
Direct from London’s West End, with its atmospheric storytelling and eerie, hair-raising moments, don’t miss this opportunity to experience the magic of Susan Hill’s best seller in Liverpool this Christmas season from Tuesday 5 December – Saturday 30 December 2023.
