David Walliams chats about Awful Auntie ahead of its run at Liverpool Empire
8 months ago
Teaming up with the acclaimed Birmingham Stage Company, Walliams brings his fourth book to life in a captivating production that promises thrills, laughter, and heartwarming moments for the whole family.
The Liverpool Empire Theatre is set to host a spellbinding stage adaptation of David Walliams’ beloved children’s adventure, Awful Auntie.
Ahead of its highly anticipated run at Liverpool Empire, from 13-16 June 2024, David Walliams has talked about the magic behind the scenes.
Awful Auntie marks the latest in a series of successful stage adaptations of Walliams’ literary gems, including Billionaire Boy and Demon Dentist.
Reflecting on the journey from page to stage, Walliams shares his excitement at seeing his imaginative worlds come to life in a theatrical setting. “It’s a thrill,” he says, “They’re the kings of doing family shows and so I’m really lucky that I can trust them 100% with it.”
With Awful Auntie’s colourful characters and larger-than-life scenes, Walliams and the Birmingham Stage Company faced the challenge of translating the story’s magic onto the stage. Yet, with meticulous attention to detail and boundless creativity, the team has crafted a production that is as spectacular as it is faithful to the book. “The show has to be spectacular, funny and thrilling,” Walliams added, “and I have seen it already and it is all of those things.”
Delving deeper into the creative process, Walliams sheds light on his involvement in the adaptation. While he entrusts director Neal Foster with bringing his vision to life, Walliams remains closely involved, offering insights and feedback throughout the production journey. “I see the designs, the costumes, the sets,” David explains, “and I come and watch rehearsals and come when the show opens.”
Speaking in an interview with Warren Higgins, David Walliams said:
“Seeing it all again I’ve realized what an amazing part Aunt Alberta is. It’s a female part played by a man so one day I would like to play Aunt Alberta, but I can’t commit to a production for practical reasons like being a dad and having to do other things but one day I’d like to. I don’t want to be too egotistical about it because if there is someone better to play it than me then they should play it.Â
“A book by David Walliams staring David Walliams… oh god! There is something special about sitting in an audience and getting to experience your story while hearing the laughter, the gasps, the applause, and all those things that would not be the same if you were on stage.”
Awful Auntie will be performing at Liverpool Empire from 13 – 16 June 2024. Tickets are on sale now.
