EDITOR’S PICKS: 10 things you can do this weekend in Liverpool

January was a long year wasn’t it?

Finally February though and it’s even feeling like Spring is in the air. Jay here with another look at what you can get up to this weekend in the greatest city on Earth.

We’ve got all sorts happening from Whitney Houston inspired parties at Camp and Furnace, to even cheesier festivals at the Guild. Have a listen in below as I join Steve Hothersall on City Talk. This time we spoke Chinese New Year, this weekends Cheese Fest at Liverpool Guild and our venue of the week was Liverpool’s underground World War 2 bunker, Western Approaches.

So what else can you get up to over the next few days…

For Breakfast…

The Quarter, Falkner St

Take yourself across the cobbles and book into one of the city’s best loved eateries. The Quarter is great anytime of day (pizzas are delicious) but their breakfast menu beats most others, hands down. All your usual favourites are on there including the Quarter Full English, Vegetarian and Eggs Florentine, plus a great range of healthy smoothies, omelettes, porridge, and more, they even do banana on toast.

For Lunch…

Savina, Queen Square

This place has surely got one of the best and most eye catching interior designs in the city, not only that, one of the best Mexican menus too. Savina is brand new to Queen Square and serves up classic Mexican street food with a modern twist. You can go for small plates which include Chilli Lime fries, Pulled Chicken Tinga or Shredded Abobo Beef. There is a huge choice of tacos, quesadillas & burritos and large plates include Enchilada, Gaucho Steak or Coconut Chicken. The signature cocktail is the Watermelon Mojito and the San Miguel is served through a special tap with no barrel, which means a fresher tastier pint. I’m sold.

Wreckfish Bistro, Seel Steet

Last week I finally got round to checking out one of the city’s most talked about new restaurants and it didn’t disappoint. Wreckfish Bistro is the brainchild of North West Chef, Gary Usher. The story behind the new venue is pretty special as you’ll see in the video above. The food is everything you hear it is and more, and what I loved most was that even with the high quality you didn’t feel like you were in a stuffy fine dining restaurant. The atmosphere is really chilled, and the whole concept felt quite fresh. Service is with a genuine, warm smile and if you go for anything on the menu make sure it’s the Marmalade on Toast after dinner cocktails. Seriously I can’t rave about this place enough, if you want a memorable dining experience in the heart of our city centre then Wreckfish is for you.

Santa Maluco, Castle Street

Santa Maluco is not only perfect for a drink but they serve up Brazilian style pizza too. It’s all about the topping choices and the thinner, crunchier crust. You can even go Rodizio and have unlimited slices served up until you signal that your’e done. Cocktails are great and Pacifico beer served up, ice cold. Perfect!

The Liverpool Comedy Club, The Bentley

We are literally spoiled for choice when it comes to great comedy venues in the city with Laughterhouse, Hot Water & Comedy Central all providing lots of laughs, week on week. We’ve now got a new one in the form of The Liverpool Comedy Club at The Bentley. Situated in one of the city’s most stunning venues overlooking the waterfront and Three Graces, it will host the cream of the international comedy circuit every Saturday night and when the laughs stop The Bentley takes over with live music to enjoy into the small hours. This Saturday for the opening night you’ll see TV Comedian Sean Meo and rising star Chris Washington, hosted by Liverpool’s very own Brendan Riley.

303 Present V, Invisible Wind Factory

Fancy a little day time rave to some of the biggest house and techno tunes out there? Liverpool’s very own 303 is celebrating five years of incredible parties this year and this Saturday they start things off in style at one of the city’s most unique spaces, Invisible Wind Factory. The fun starts at 2pm and runs until midnight, with the night party continuing at the Substation. DJ’s includes Nick Warren & Guy J.

For a Super Bowl Sunday Sesh…

O’Neill’s, Hanover Street

I won’t lie I know as much about American Football as I do about Pythagorean theorem, but it seems that Liverpool has really got behind the big NFL final this year with parties happening across the city. I only found out this week that we actually have three American Football teams here, and on Sunday they are lining up a huge Super Bowl party at O’Neill’s on Hanover Street complete with American themed menu, live music and all the action on two giant screens and 15 more smaller screens throughout the venue. You won’t miss a kick (do they kick in American Footie?).

Liverpool’s Old Dock Tours

Did you know Liverpool’s original Dock has been carefully preserved underneath Liverpool ONE? The Old Dock was discovered during excavations in 2001 after being buried since 1826. This is the exact spot where Liverpool made its name as one of the greatest maritime city’s in the world. It was constructed in 1715 and now 303 years later you can go and explore it yourself. Tours start at the Albert Dock’s Maritime Museum and run Monday-Wednesday and the first Saturday of every month, which means you have three chances to have your mind blown by our incredible history this weekend.

Granby Street Market

Go support the gang on Granby Street this Saturday as their market returns for the first time this year, bringing with it great food stalls with lots of veggie and vegan options, arts & crafts in abundance, vintage fashions, antiques and of course plenty of bric-a-brac. It’s open 10-3pm Saturday 3rd February 2018.

To give something back…

Backpack for the Homeless

This Sunday you can directly help Liverpool’s homeless by simply dropping off a backpack filled with essentials at Liverpool Central Station. It’s so simple but will make such a big difference to someone living on the streets. You find an old backpack and fill with a sandwich, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, baby wipes, a face cloth, a small hand towel, whatever. The good people at the Art & Soul Tribe and The Lunar Project will then head out on to the streets to give them out, they’ll be Central Station between 12 and 3pm this Sunday (4th Feb 2018).
